Lena Dunham Nude Scenes: Girls, Treasure and Every Clip
Yes, Lena Dunham has done a lot of nude scenes, and almost all of them are in HBO’s Girls (2012–2017), the show she created and starred in as Hannah Horvath. She is also topless in Treasure (2024), American Horror Story: Cult and her first film, Tiny Furniture.
This hub collects 16 of her best clips, each with its length and its own write-up: twelve from Girls (Montauk with Riz Ahmed, two days with Patrick Wilson and a long run of scenes with Adam Driver), plus Treasure, her Netflix show Too Much, American Horror Story: Cult and Tiny Furniture. The hero clip above is Hannah and Paul-Louis in bed from the first episode of the final season.
Updated: November 5, 2026 (Bangkok). New hub: every clip written up from scratch.

I’ve been behind the camera since 2001 and shot 2,000+ scenes, and I can count on one hand the stars who wrote their own nude scenes, directed them and then played them. Lena Dunham did it for six seasons on HBO, in daylight, with no body double and no apology. People argued about it for years. Here is every clip of hers worth watching.
- Hannah and Paul-Louis in bed: Girls, season 6 (3:12)
- Hannah naked in the beach room: Girls, season 6 (1:58)
- Topless ping-pong with Joshua: Girls, season 2 (0:42)
- Hannah teases Adam on the couch: Girls, season 3 (1:23)
- Hannah and Paul-Louis at night: Girls, season 6 (1:59)
- Hannah and Adam in the hotel bathtub: Girls, season 3 (1:51)
- Hannah and Adam, a deleted scene: Girls, season 3 (1:30)
- Hannah tries role-play: Girls, season 3 (2:13)
- Ruth in the hotel bath: Treasure, 2024 (0:59)

Lena Dunham is an American writer, director and actress from New York City. She created, wrote and starred in HBO’s Girls, won two Golden Globes for it, and became the first woman to win the Directors Guild of America award for directing a comedy series.
Lena Dunham in Girls (2012–2017)
Series: Girls (HBO), created by Lena Dunham, executive-produced by Judd Apatow and Jenni Konner | Role: Hannah Horvath | What you see: full frontal and topless nudity in most seasons, with Adam Driver, Patrick Wilson and Riz Ahmed
Hannah is a writer in her twenties trying to make it in New York, and a lot of her story came from Dunham’s own life. Dunham got undressed in almost every season and wrote the sex to look real rather than glossy, which made the show famous and made it a target. For the whole cast, see our Girls sex scenes hub, plus Jemima Kirke, Allison Williams and Julia Garner.
Hannah and Paul-Louis in bed, season 6 episode 1 (3:12)
This is the clip at the top of this page.
The best Lena Dunham clip there is, and the longest. Hannah has gone to Montauk to write a surf story and has spent the trip with her instructor Paul-Louis (Riz Ahmed) instead. Here they are in his little room in the morning light, both naked, wrapped round each other on green sheets, joking, dozing and starting again. Three minutes of easy, happy sex from a show that usually made sex awkward, and Dunham looks completely at home.
Hannah and Paul-Louis at night, season 6 episode 1 (1:59)
The night before that morning. Paul-Louis pulls Hannah into his cramped room with the bunk bed, she yanks her dress over her head, and the rest plays out in amber light from a strip lamp: Hannah on her front, him over her, then her on top and laughing. It is darker and rougher than the morning scene, and it shows why Hannah forgot all about her article.
Hannah wanders round the room naked, season 6 episode 1 (1:58)
Same trip, a couple of minutes later. Hannah slips out of the bed, stark naked, and potters round the small beach room looking for her things while Paul-Louis lies there watching. No sheet, no towel, no clever angles, just daylight and Dunham walking about with nothing on. If one clip sums up how she did nudity on Girls, this is it.
Topless ping-pong with Joshua, season 2 episode 5 (0:42)
From One Man’s Trash, the episode where Hannah spends two days in a Brooklyn brownstone with Joshua (Patrick Wilson), a doctor she barely knows. Morning of day two: Hannah in nothing but her knickers, bouncing round a ping-pong table in a bright sunroom, swinging the paddle and grinning. It is daft and charming, and it is the happiest Hannah looks all season.
Hannah and Joshua in bed, season 2 episode 5 (0:47)
The tender part of the same episode. Joshua kisses her in the dim bedroom while she lies back with her eyes closed, and then it cuts to the next day, with Hannah spread out naked across his enormous white bed in the sun. Short, warm and a bit sad, because you already know this fantasy weekend is going to end.
Hannah and Adam, a season 3 deleted scene (1:30)
A deleted scene from the season three premiere. Adam takes Hannah from behind on the bed while she is still in a flowery pyjama top, then they move to the bathroom, where Hannah stands topless at the sink drinking a glass of water and Adam, in the shower, drags her in for a kiss. Silly, sweet and very them. Hard to see why it got cut.
Hannah and Adam on the floral pillows, season 3 episode 1 (1:44)
From the episode that did make it to air, Females Only. Hannah and Adam lie naked on a bed piled with loud flowery cushions, kissing and talking nonsense, and Hannah takes a phone call with Adam still wrapped round her. Nothing dramatic happens, which is the point: by season three these two are actually happy together.
Hannah gets dressed, season 3 episode 4 (0:44)
Morning in the apartment from Dead Inside. Hannah wakes up in a blue T-shirt next to Adam under a mountain of white duvet in front of the carved headboard, climbs out and changes at the wardrobe, topless for a good stretch of it, while Adam sits up with his hair everywhere and watches her. A plain little domestic moment, shot in soft daylight.
Hannah and Adam in the hotel bathtub, season 3 episode 8 (1:51)
Incidentals gives the pair a rare treat: a posh hotel suite and a tub the size of a small pool. Hannah sits topless in the water under a paper-screened window while Adam messes about at the other end. They chat, splash and generally act like kids on holiday. Under two minutes of the most relaxed nudity in the show.
Hannah teases Adam on the couch, season 3 episode 10 (1:23)
Adam is buried in his script on the teal couch, and Hannah is not having it. She wanders in wrapped in a green dress, leans over him, kisses his neck and finally lets the dress drop to her waist, topless and grinning while he tries to keep reading. It is the warm-up to the role-play night, and her face when he barely looks up is the funniest bit.
Hannah tries role-play, season 3 episode 10 (2:13)
The main event of Role-Play. Hannah puts on a platinum wig and a strappy black harness and pretends to be a stranger Adam has just picked up, then follows him round the apartment and onto the bed. It is brave, funny and a little bit desperate, and it does not end the way she wanted. One of Dunham’s boldest scenes in the series.
Hannah and Adam at home, season 3 episode 11 (1:39)
Near the end of season three, in their wood-panelled apartment. It opens with the two of them having sex under the bedside lamp, then Hannah sits up topless on the edge of the mattress while Adam pulls a T-shirt on and they carry on with their evening. The most married they ever looked.
Lena Dunham in Treasure (2024)
Film: Treasure, directed by Julia von Heinz, with Stephen Fry | Role: Ruth | What you see: topless in a hotel bubble bath
A German-French tragicomedy based on Lily Brett’s novel Too Many Men. Ruth takes her father Edek, an Auschwitz survivor, back to Poland in the early 1990s to see where he grew up, and he spends the trip charming everyone and dodging the past. It premiered at the Berlin Film Festival in February 2024, and Dunham also produced it.
Ruth in the hotel bath (0:59)
Her most recent topless scene. Ruth, a New Yorker on a trip through Poland with her father (Stephen Fry), sinks into a bubble bath in a green-tiled hotel bathroom and reads through a handful of papers, breasts just above the foam. Then she wraps up in a towel and a turban and sits down at the desk with the lamp on. Quiet, unhurried, and shot almost from above.
Lena Dunham in Too Much (2025)
Series: Too Much (Netflix), created by Lena Dunham and Luis Felber, with Megan Stalter and Will Sharpe | Role: Nora South | What you see: a bare back and a towel, no nudity
Dunham’s romantic comedy for Netflix, made with her husband, musician Luis Felber. Megan Stalter plays Jessica, a New York producer who moves to London after a breakup and falls for an indie musician. Dunham plays her older sister Nora in five episodes. Emily Ratajkowski plays Wendy, the influencer Jessica cannot stop posting about.
Nora in the towel, episode 9 (0:59)
In her own Netflix show, Dunham gave herself the part of Nora, the older sister. This clip starts with Nora pulling her top off with her back to the camera in a cluttered bedroom with a pink lamp, then cuts to her clutching a white towel to her chest, with something sparkly smeared across her face, arguing with a man in glasses who has walked in. No nudity, but very funny.
Lena Dunham in American Horror Story: Cult (2017)
Series: American Horror Story: Cult (FX), season 7 episode 7, “Valerie Solanas Died for Your Sins: Scumbag” | Role: Valerie Solanas | What you see: topless in bed with Lyla Porter-Follows
A flashback episode, aired on October 17, 2017, about Valerie Solanas, the radical feminist who wrote the SCUM Manifesto and shot Andy Warhol in 1968. Entertainment Weekly said Dunham’s performance made the long flashbacks worth it.
Valerie Solanas in bed, season 7 episode 7 (0:41)
Dunham as the real Valerie Solanas, author of the SCUM Manifesto, in the episode that tells her story. In a candle-lit 1960s bedroom she lies under the covers with her lover Bebe Babbitt (Lyla Porter-Follows, the 1960s version of Frances Conroy’s character), the two of them topless and close, talking and smoking in the low orange light. A soft scene in the middle of a very dark hour of television.
Lena Dunham in Tiny Furniture (2010)
Film: Tiny Furniture, written and directed by Lena Dunham | Role: Aura | What you see: topless in a bathroom, seen from the hallway
Her breakthrough. Aura comes home to her mother’s place in New York after college with no plan, and Dunham cast her real mother, Laurie Simmons, as Aura’s mother. The film won Best Narrative Feature at South by Southwest, earned her the Independent Spirit Award for Best First Screenplay and led straight to her HBO deal.
Aura in the bathroom (0:24)
Where it all started. In her own first feature, which she wrote and directed, Dunham plays Aura, just back home in New York after college, with her real mother Laurie Simmons playing her mother. The camera stays out in the dark hallway and looks through the open door into a bright blue bathroom, where Aura moves about topless. It is distant and very short, but it is the film that got her the HBO deal.
What I Left Out
Girls has more nudity than any page can hold, so I was picky. I skipped a season one Hannah and Adam scene that does not belong on this page, a very dark season one clip you can barely see, the season six scene with the famous author, and the scenes where the nudity has nothing to do with sex: Hannah pregnant in the bath, breastfeeding in the finale, and a few others. I also left out the long compilations that repeat these scenes, the low-quality season five copies, a longer Tiny Furniture bath clip, her Inside Amy Schumer sketch (a clear raincoat, nothing to see), and her short web videos from before Tiny Furniture.

Here’s my take. Whatever you think of Lena Dunham, nobody else on television did what she did. She wrote Hannah, directed a lot of the episodes, and then took her clothes off in front of the crew in scene after scene, with a normal body and the lights on. Most stars negotiate their nudity down. She wrote it in.
The best of it is the Montauk episode with Riz Ahmed, the happiest sex Hannah ever has, and the One Man’s Trash weekend with Patrick Wilson. The Adam Driver scenes are the long story, and you can watch the two of them get comfortable with each other season by season.
If you only have five minutes, start with Hannah and Paul-Louis in bed and then the topless ping-pong. Then go back and watch season two from the start.
