Sydney Sweeney Tears Up Between Michele Morrone and Stephen Kalyn as Paparazzi Threaten Housemaid 2’s Twists

Sydney Sweeney and Michele Morrone, news graphic on The Housemaid's Secret set: tears, kisses and spoilers

Sydney Sweeney was seen tearing up on a New York City street on Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 4, as Stephen Kalyn walked away and Michele Morrone stood in the distance, filming a scene for “The Housemaid’s Secret,” Just Jared reports. A day earlier she was photographed hugging Morrone in the West Village and walking hand-in-hand with Kalyn at Hunter College. And Page Six now says so many paparazzi are crowding the shoot that producers worry the photos will give away the sequel’s twists.

I’m Nico Grey. I run NicoGrey.com and Scandal Planet, I’ve been behind the camera since 2001 and shot more than 2,000 scenes, and I know what a closed set is supposed to look like. This isn’t one. When the sidewalk across from your shoot is busier than the shoot, you’ve either got a problem or a hit. With Sydney, it’s a hit.

Below: what the photos from this week actually show, the posts everyone is sharing, why the studio is nervous, who each of Millie’s two men is, the set diary since mid-October, and what the book does (and doesn’t) tell you.

What happened on set this week

Wednesday, Nov. 4. The emotional one. Sydney, 29, was seen crying in the street while Kalyn walked away from her and Morrone watched from a distance, Just Jared reports. It’s a scene, not a fight: all three were in costume and on the clock.

Tuesday, Nov. 3. Two very different scenes on the same day. In the West Village, Sydney and Morrone were photographed in a tight side-hug and then a full embrace, The Mirror US reports. She wore a black leather jacket and loose blue jeans, and he wore a brown jacket, a gray shirt and dark jeans. The same day she was back with Kalyn, who was in a suit, for what The Mirror calls a walk-and-talk. Page Six posted photos of the two of them hand-in-hand at Hunter College.

The posts everyone is sharing

Here are Just Jared’s Nov. 4 post, Page Six’s Hunter College post and its spoiler story, and the Oct. 30 kiss post that started all this. When we checked on Thursday morning, Bangkok time, that last one had passed 950,000 views:

NICO’S TAKE
Nico Grey

Two leading men on one Manhattan sidewalk, a tear right on cue and a wall of lenses across the street. Darling, that’s not a closed set. That’s a premiere nobody sold tickets to.

Page Six says producers are scared of spoilers. My take: the only thing those photographers are spoiling is our patience. Brock gets the suit and the kiss. Enzo gets the bear hug and the history. Sydney gets the whole city leaning in. When a crew can’t keep the street clear, it’s usually because the chemistry is the story.

The sequel is two years away. Millie’s first round isn’t: “The Housemaid” scenes, plus “Euphoria,” “The Voyeurs,” “Immaculate” and “Anyone but You,” scene by scene on her Scandal Planet hub.

Why producers are nervous

Page Six reported on Nov. 4 that the crowd of photographers is now a production problem. “They are filming in New York and New Jersey with Sydney and Kirsten Dunst,” an insider told the outlet. “There’s so much paparazzi on site that every day [the shoot] is literally trying to avoid spoilers from the paparazzi. They do what they can to block the photographers, because it’s a thriller with twists and stuff.”

Another source told Page Six the production wants to save the twists for theater audiences. The same insider said the film looks “really stylish and cool.” And a photographer on the scene said: “Sydney is great and it’s been a very relaxed set. There haven’t been any issues.” So nobody’s fighting. The studio just doesn’t want a street photo to give away a twist two years early.

Millie’s two men: who’s who

Brock (Stephen Kalyn). He’s new to the films. Brock is Millie’s boyfriend in the sequel, a wealthy, sharply dressed lawyer, per The Mirror US. Kalyn is the “Off Campus” star, and Screen Rant notes he also joined the “Gen V” world before this. He’s the one in the suits and in the kiss photos.

Enzo (Michele Morrone). He’s back from the first film, where he played the Winchesters’ Italian landscaper, and Page Six notes he played a pivotal role in Millie’s escape. Morrone, 36, is still best known as Massimo from “365 Days”, the Netflix trilogy that made him famous. He’s the one in the brown jacket and in the hug photos.

What the book tells you (light spoilers)

The film is based on Freida McFadden’s 2023 novel of the same name, per Deadline. In the book, the story picks up about four years after the first one, and Millie and Enzo “started four years ago as friends,” according to The Bibliofile‘s recap. By the time the book opens, Enzo has been gone for about two years and Millie is with Brock. When her new job goes wrong, Enzo is the one she reaches out to. That’s all we’ll give away, and screenwriter Rebecca Sonnenshine, back from the first film, can change any of it.

So this week’s photos fit the book’s setup. Brock is the man Millie is with, and Enzo is the one who comes back. Just don’t treat a sidewalk photo as the ending.

Why the studio is protecting this one

“The Housemaid” made $400 million worldwide on a $35 million budget for Lionsgate, and the studio greenlit the sequel a little over two weeks after the first film opened, Page Six reports. Paul Feig is directing again, and Sydney is also an executive producer this time, per Deadline.

The new cast, per Deadline: Kirsten Dunst plays Wendy Garrick, the woman Millie keeps house for but is never allowed to see. Paul Anthony Kelly makes his film debut as her billionaire husband, Douglas, and Brittany Snow, fresh off “The Hunting Wives,” is Marybeth. Amanda Seyfried isn’t back as Nina, though she’s an executive producer, and Brandon Sklenar’s Andrew died in the first film (Page Six; Deadline). The release date is Dec. 17, 2027.

Confirmed vs. my opinion

Confirmed: the Nov. 4 tears scene (Just Jared); the Nov. 3 Morrone embrace and outfits (The Mirror US); the Hunter College photos (Page Six); the insider and photographer quotes about the paparazzi (Page Six); the cast, roles and release date (Deadline).

My read (opinion): that the crowd outside proves the chemistry, and that Enzo still has the edge. Neither Lionsgate, Feig nor anyone in the cast has said a word about how the triangle ends on screen. And these kisses and hugs are scripted scenes, not anyone’s love life.

What to watch next

We’ll be watching for the first official still or teaser from Lionsgate, set photos of Kirsten Dunst’s Wendy (the reveal the studio most wants to protect), any word from Feig or Sydney about the paparazzi, and the shoot moving to New Jersey. We’ll update this page if the production comments.
