Zosia Mamet is an American actress best known as Shoshanna Shapiro, the fast-talking, label-obsessed roommate in Lena Dunham’s Girls. Laura Linney returns as Mary Ann Singleton, back at 28 Barbary Lane in San Francisco after twenty years away. Elliot Page (credited at the time as Ellen Page) plays Shawna, the daughter she left behind, and Mamet plays Claire, a filmmaker in town to make a documentary about the house. Claire and Shawna start with a one-night stand in the first episode and fall into a real affair, until the last episodes reveal what Claire was really after.

Her best scene on screen, and the closest she has come to a real sex scene. It opens with a long kiss outside under a string of fairy lights, Claire’s blonde hair falling over Shawna (Elliot Page) as they lean into each other. Then it moves inside: the two of them by the bedroom window, pulling at each other’s clothes, and finally on the bed, Claire on her back in a black bra while Shawna kisses her neck and shoulders. Warm, low light and a lot of slow close-ups. A minute long and worth every second.

The first night kiss, episode 1 (0:25)

The start of the whole affair, from the first episode. Late at night, outside a bar in a back lane with a fire escape, Claire pulls Shawna against a brick wall and they kiss hard in the red light. It is dark and grainy, mostly faces, hands and hair, then a quiet shot of the empty lane, then more kissing. The one-night stand that turns into the show’s best side story.

The kiss in the park, episode 3 (0:17)

A sweet one. Blue sky, orange autumn trees, Claire in a green field jacket and Shawna in a black cap. Shawna reaches for her face, they kiss and keep kissing, foreheads together, and Claire cannot stop smiling. Barely a quarter of a minute, no nudity, and it still makes the list because the chemistry is so easy.

The famous one from Hannah’s Diary. Shoshanna takes her old camp friend Matt (Skylar Astin) back to her pink, stuffed-animal-filled bedroom, and it moves fast: shirts off, Shoshanna in a purple bra and panties on the bed, Matt heading south while she stares at the ceiling in disbelief. Then she blurts out that she has never had sex, and the last minute is the two of them lying side by side as he talks his way out of it. Hot, awkward and very funny, which is Shoshanna in one clip.

The couch hook-up, season 3 episode 6 (0:50)

Season three Shoshanna has decided to stop studying all the time and start living, and this is that phase in one clip. In a dim apartment lit by the city outside, she pulls a naked guy towards her, and the scene ends up with her bent over the arm of a white couch with him behind her. She keeps her top on and the lighting is low (I brightened it a little), but it is the only proper sex scene she has in Girls.

Morning in bed, season 3 episode 1 (0:18)

A lazy morning after. Shoshanna, bare-shouldered under a striped duvet, is curled up against a shirtless guy who is still half asleep. She stretches, wraps an arm round his neck, snuggles in closer. Then a quick cut to her dorm room as she climbs up to her loft bed. Short and cosy.

What I Left Out

I kept this page to scenes that are worth watching and that belong on Scandal Planet. I skipped the Under the Silver Lake pool party clip, because the nudity there belongs to other actresses and she is barely in it, a short Decameron clip that is mostly other characters, and two Bleeding Heart and The Boy Downstairs clips where nothing much happens. I also left out a few Girls clips: the bridesmaid dress scene from the season five wedding, a bathroom scene from season four, and the Beach House bikini scene, which is a group scene. Her scenes in the 2010 film Cherry are not here either, by choice.

Who Is Zosia Mamet?

Zosia Mamet was born on February 2, 1988, in Randolph, Vermont. She is the daughter of the playwright and director David Mamet and the actress Lindsay Crouse, and her great-grandfather was the playwright Russel Crouse. She grew up in New England and then in Pacific Palisades, California, and went straight into acting instead of going to college.

Before Girls she had small roles in United States of Tara, Parenthood and Mad Men, where she played Joyce Ramsay. Judd Apatow cast her as Shoshanna in Girls in 2012, and she played her for all six seasons.
