The scene that made people notice her. In the pilot, Darlene sits topless at the foot of a hotel bed while a big, cheerful client shuffles around the room wearing nothing but a diaper and a smile. He wants to be babied, she wants her money, and Fishback plays the whole thing with a straight face and the tiniest flicker of amusement. It is funny, a little sad and very human, which is Darlene in one clip.

Darlene on a cheap porn set dressed up as a nurse, white cap and short pink uniform, in a fake hospital room full of lamps and cables while the cameraman gets his angles. Then the uniform comes down. The best part is the last few seconds: Candy (Maggie Gyllenhaal) in her leopard coat leans in close to whisper direction in her ear while Darlene stands there topless under the lights. Short, but it is her most explicit moment in the series.

No client, no pimp, no camera. Darlene comes home to a bare room with a white brick wall, a single bed and a little lamp, and slowly peels off the night, piece by piece. Then she sits on the edge of the bed in the half dark. Almost a minute with no dialogue at all, and it says more about how tired she is than any line in the script. Quiet and beautifully lit.

A dark satire about fandom. Dre is a quiet woman from Houston whose obsession with a pop star called Ni’Jah turns murderous after her foster sister Marissa (Chloe Bailey) dies, and the show follows her across the country from 2016 to 2018. It is violent and very funny in places, and it got Fishback an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series. Kiersey Clemons, who plays Rashida, also has a scene from Easy on SP.

Dre on the pole, episode 2 (0:24)

Episode two finds Dre working at a strip club in Tennessee, and this is her on stage: long braids, glittery bikini, neon red and blue lights and a pole all to herself. She climbs, spins, slides to the floor and crawls across the stage while the room watches. There is no nudity, but it is the sexiest Fishback has ever looked on screen, and the way she glares out at the crowd tells you this woman is not there for tips.

Dre and Rashida on the couch, episode 7 (0:29)

In Atlanta, Dre has cut her hair, changed her name to Toni and gone home with Rashida (Kiersey Clemons). This is the two of them falling onto a turquoise couch in a sunny apartment, kissing hard, Rashida climbing on top in a red dress and later a yellow top with a lace bra. Playful and heated, with a lot of laughing between the kisses, and the warmest Dre ever gets in the whole series.

Dre and George, episode 3 (1:06)

Episode three takes Dre to Los Angeles, where she follows George, a sound man working the release party for Ni’Jah’s husband’s new album, back to his place. The clip opens in his dark kitchen, with her eating chips while he gets out of his clothes, and ends the next morning with Dre sprawled across his bed in a white bra, chip crumbs all over the pillows, before she sits up to face him. Funny, awkward and a bit unsettling, like the whole show.

Dre at the house call, episode 2 (0:35)

Some of the dancers from the club talk Dre into driving them to a private party, and she ends up on a guy’s bed in a lamp-lit room, down to her bra, eating snacks and looking completely unimpressed while he sits there next to her. One of the other dancers walks past the doorway naked in the background. It is a short, strange little scene, and Fishback’s bored face is the joke.

The anthology series based on the New York Times column. In her episode Fishback plays Lil, a stand-up comedian looking back on her friendship with Vince, the friend she was secretly in love with for years. They finally sleep together, he tells her he regrets it, and they do not speak again for a long time.

The clip is mostly close-ups: Lil on her back in a pale blue bra top, eyes closed, laughing and gasping, then Vince over her, then the two of them getting dressed in a warm, cluttered bedroom afterwards. It is the night the whole episode turns on, and Fishback plays it sweet and nervous.

The next day. Lil is stretched out across the bed in black underwear and a tank top, hair everywhere, chatting away and grinning while Vince sits at the desk across the room. Watch him rather than her: the talk that comes next ends their friendship for years. Under half a minute, but it is where the episode turns from romance into heartbreak.

Not every clip made the cut.
