I’ve been behind the camera since 2001 and shot 2,000+ scenes, and I can tell you the hardest thing to fake on screen is boredom. Margarita Levieva does it in her very first Deuce scene, topless on a couch with a cigarette, and it is more convincing than most sex scenes I have seen on TV. Add the blue-sheet scene in Spread and you have one of the most underrated nude careers out there. Here is every clip worth your time.

Margarita Levieva is a Russian-American actress who moved to Brooklyn from Russia at 11. She is best known as Abby Parker in David Simon’s HBO drama The Deuce, as the real Amanda Clarke in Revenge, and more recently as Heather Glenn in Marvel’s Daredevil: Born Again.

She is the outsider who walks into the 1970s sex trade by choice, and Levieva plays her with a sharp tongue and zero shame. Her first scene in the series and still her best. On a worn couch in a sunny walk-up, Abby rides a mustached guy in an open shirt who is clearly having a much better time than she is. Then she climbs off, topless, picks up a cigarette and leans by the tall window, smoking in the daylight while he lies there. No dialogue needed: you know exactly who Abby is before she ever walks into Vincent’s bar.

A quiet night-time scene. It opens in the dark, then the bedside lamp comes on and Abby lies topless across rumpled gold sheets next to a sleeping lover. Later she is sitting up in a loose, unbuttoned shirt with a book in her lap, reading by the lamp while the city hums outside the window. It is short and moody, and it shows the restless student side of Abby rather than the bar owner she becomes.

Abby and Vincent (James Franco) after sex, stretched out on white sheets in his apartment. The camera starts above the bed and then drops to their level as they talk, tease each other and reach over to switch off the lamp. Levieva stays topless the whole time and the mood is easy and warm, the two of them actually enjoying each other. On a show this tough, scenes like this are rare, which is why they stick.

Season two jumps ahead to 1977. This short clip finds Abby curled up under grey-green sheets in a lamp-lit bedroom, her bare back and shoulders out of the covers as she shifts and settles in next to her partner. It is a soft, sleepy moment, more intimate than explicit, with the warm lamp in the corner doing most of the work.

Morning light through green curtains. Abby walks around the bedroom topless, talking the whole time while a long-haired man sits up in bed and listens. She pulls a striped top over her head, takes it off again and keeps arguing her point. It is a very Abby scene: half-dressed, opinionated and completely at ease in her own skin.

Before The Deuce, HBO cast her as Julie, the woman Ben falls for in How to Make It in America. The clip opens with Julie topless in bed in a dim apartment, then moves into a playful night with Ben (Bryan Greenberg): she grins up at him from the pillows, the two of them roll around in white sheets and she ends up in a little white top, laughing. Light, sexy and very New York.

Kutcher plays Nikki, a Los Angeles gigolo who lives off rich women, until he meets Heather, a waitress who will not fall for his lines. She turns up in the pool one night, they sleep together, and he slowly works out that she is running exactly the same game he is. The film premiered at Sundance in January 2009.

The best-looking scene she has ever shot. Heather and Nikki (Ashton Kutcher) lie tangled together on a bed in cool blue light, a thin blue sheet barely covering her, a latticed window behind them. They talk and kiss and he traces her back while she smiles up at him. A minute and a bit of slow, gorgeous, unhurried nudity, and the moment the film’s resident player realises he is in trouble.

Heather and Nikki, night in bed (2:02)

Her longest clip on this page at just over two minutes. It starts with Heather in a white tank top in a doorway, then moves to a dark bedroom where she and Nikki end up under the covers together. Most of it is in low light, with plenty of kissing as Kutcher leans over her against the white pillows. Dark, but close and intimate, and the chemistry between the two of them is real.

The scene that starts it all. Heather shows up uninvited at night and slips into the glowing turquoise pool at the house where Nikki is staying, swimming lazy laps in a black bikini top and thong while he comes down the stone steps to find her. Barefoot, sly and completely sure of herself, she does not have to say a word.

In ABC’s Hamptons revenge soap, Emily VanCamp’s heroine was born Amanda Clarke and comes back to town as Emily Thorne after secretly swapping identities with another woman. Levieva plays that woman, the real Emily Thorne, now living as Amanda Clarke, who turns up and complicates everything. It is network TV, so the bikini is as far as it goes, but this is the scene fans remember.

Amanda swims laps in the pool of a glass-walled beach house, stops at the edge to push her wet hair back, then climbs out and walks across the deck while a guy in a grey hoodie stands and watches. No nudity here, but it is the sexiest she looks in all of Revenge, and the bikini does a lot of heavy lifting.

Netflix’s one-season spy thriller. Levieva leads as Jenny Franklin, a divorced New Jersey mom in Madrid for her daughter’s figure-skating competition, until the CIA exposes her buried past as a Russian spy with shape-shifting powers.

What I Left Out

Not every clip made the cut. I skipped scenes with no real nudity, very dark Deuce scenes where you can barely see anything, low-resolution copies and duplicate cuts of the scenes above. I also left out the violent scenes from her action and horror work (Knights of Badassdom, The Blacklist), because they are not what this page is for, and a couple of compilations where I could not be sure every shot was actually her.

Who Is Margarita Levieva?

Margarita Levieva was born in Russia and moved to the United States at 11 with her mother and her twin brother, Michael, settling in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn. She did rhythmic gymnastics from the age of three, and she later graduated from New York University a year early with a double major in economics and psychology, while working full-time as a fashion buyer.

She started acting in the mid-2000s with the Fox series Vanished and the film The Invisible, then built a steady list of credits: Adventureland, Spread, The Lincoln Lawyer, How to Make It in America, Revenge, The Blacklist, Allegiance, Sleeping with Other People and Future World. The Deuce gave her a main role across all 25 episodes. Since then she has starred in In From the Cold and Litvinenko, played Mother Koril in Star Wars: The Acolyte and joined Marvel’s Daredevil: Born Again as Heather Glenn.
