I’ve been behind the camera since 2001 and shot 2,000+ scenes, and I have a lot of respect for an actress who gets frustrated with the parts she is offered and goes off to write and direct her own film. That is Talulah Riley. Most people know her as the prim Mary Bennet from Pride & Prejudice or as Angela in Westworld, but her best scenes are hiding in films far fewer people have seen. Here is every one worth your time.

Talulah Riley is an English actress, born on September 26, 1985 in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire. She is best known for Pride & Prejudice (2005), The Boat That Rocked (2009), Inception (2010), Angela in HBO’s Westworld and Vivienne Westwood in the FX series Pistol (2022).

Gina and her husband Ray (Vin Diesel) are tangled up in a candle-lit bedroom behind white mosquito nets, all warm amber light, bare shoulders and long blonde curls falling over his chest. In a dark, wood-panelled room lit by two small lamps, Angela slips out of her dress and stands with her back to the camera in a black lace bra and a tiny black thong, then turns slowly in the lamplight. Then the two of them are waist-deep in the water, him shirtless and her laughing, and the scene drops underwater for a long, dreamy swim along the stony riverbed with her hair floating everywhere. Pretty, playful and a bit romantic.

Beth goes wild swimming in a red bikini (1:37)

Talulah wrote and directed this one herself, and she gave Beth the best entrance in the film. Out in the Highlands, she wades into an ice-cold brown river in a red bikini, dives under and swims while a Glasgow lad by his white van tries to look like he is not staring. One of his mates strips to red trunks and splashes in after her, and the clip ends with a long, dripping close-up of Beth standing in the grass, soaked and unimpressed.

Then we are up on the deck at golden hour, the sun flaring through the trees as she walks along the edge of the pool in her bikini. Thirty seconds, and the best-looking part of the film.

In a shadowy workshop lit by a single candle, she walks up to Adam (Jack O’Connell), takes his hands and presses them to her chest, then pulls him in for a slow kiss. Very dark, very brief and full of tension, because nobody in this film is who they seem to be.

Who Is Talulah Riley?

Talulah Riley was born Talulah Jane Riley-Milburn in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, where she grew up; her father Doug Milburn later wrote for TV dramas such as The Bill and Silent Witness. Her breakthrough came as Mary Bennet, the bookish sister in Joe Wright’s Pride & Prejudice (2005), followed by Richard Curtis’s The Boat That Rocked (2009) and a small part in Christopher Nolan’s Inception (2010).
