Season 3 moves the story into a sleek future city, and here Dolores ends up naked again in a sterile white room behind a glass wall while men in suits watch from the other side. After a whole film of near misses, Gabi finally pulls Charlie into her bedroom. It starts standing up, all hands and buttons, her green blouse half open, and then they fall onto the bed under a warm amber lamp. Wood’s hair is dyed a deep red for the role and it spreads over the white sheets while LaBeouf kisses his way down her neck. Director Fredrik Bond keeps the camera close and a little shaky, so it feels like you are in the room rather than watching a love scene. Her face does the talking: half relief, half hunger.

Gabi told Charlie she would kiss him if he could find her again, and here he collects. The two of them stand nose to nose in the dim orange light of her apartment, and the first kiss turns into a second, slower one before he starts working on her blouse. It is the build-up to the bedroom scene above, and it is worth watching on its own just for how long Wood makes him wait.
