Nipplegate Is Back: Janet Jackson Will Relive Her Super Bowl Wardrobe Malfunction in Justin Timberlake’s Apple Tell-All
I’ve been behind the camera since 2001 and shot more than 2,000 scenes, and I can tell you the most famous breast in TV history was on screen for about half a second. Twenty-two years later, the guy who tore the costume wants to talk about it. On Apple. In four parts. With Janet herself.

Justin Timberlake is about to drop a four-part “tell-all” docuseries on Apple TV in December, and Janet Jackson is in it, talking about the night he exposed her breast at the 2004 Super Bowl. Variety broke it on Monday, Nov. 2, 2026, citing three sources (Variety). One source says the series features Janet “discussing the infamous ‘wardrobe malfunction’ that took place during the pair’s performance at the 2004 Super Bowl.” Another says Timberlake also gets into “some of former girlfriend Britney Spears’ recent comments.” The series is directed by Fisher Stevens. Reps for Timberlake, Jackson and Apple didn’t comment.
X lost it within minutes. Pop Base‘s post hit about 412,000 views and 5,500 likes, Variety’s own post passed 100,000 views (Variety on X), Film Updates added the Britney angle, and roughly 670 posts about Janet and the docuseries went up in the next 12 hours, as we counted at about 9 a.m. Bangkok time on Nov. 3.

The half-second that started it all: Super Bowl XXXVIII, 2004
Feb. 1, 2004, Houston. Janet was the headliner; Justin was the guest. They closed with his “Rock Your Body,” and on the line “gonna have you naked by the end of this song,” he grabbed at her costume and her right breast came out on live TV (Rolling Stone), a sun-shaped shield on the nipple, in front of about 150 million viewers (Entertainment Weekly). He called it a “wardrobe malfunction,” and the phrase never left.
Here’s the half-second that broke American TV. Super Bowl XXXVIII, Houston, Feb. 1, 2004: Justin Timberlake sings the last line of “Rock Your Body,” pulls at Janet Jackson’s black leather bustier, and her right breast pops out, sun-shaped nipple shield and all, in front of millions before the broadcast cuts away.
Super Bowl XXXVIII halftime show (2004): the wardrobe malfunction (0:18) · more on her hub
What came next was brutal, and almost all of it landed on her. Rolling Stone writes that Jackson “received the majority of the crushing blowback,” was blacklisted from radio and saw her career “momentarily derailed,” while Timberlake “received little repercussion” (Rolling Stone). The Guardian notes she was banned from that year’s Grammys (The Guardian). In 2018 he was back headlining the Super Bowl halftime show on his own (ABC News).

Here’s what nobody in the Variety story says out loud: Janet didn’t need this documentary. Justin did.
She took the hit for 22 years. Radio froze her out, the Grammys shut the door, and he walked back onto the same Super Bowl stage in 2018 like nothing happened. Then came the 2021 apology, after the Britney documentary put him in the firing line. Now his comeback project needs the one woman who can make it matter.
My take, after 2,000+ scenes: whoever gets the last word in an edit owns the story. If Janet really sits down for this, she is the one holding the scissors. My bet? She steals the whole series in one interview, and he lets her, because he has to.

What Janet has already said about Justin
She has done this once before, on her own terms. In her 2022 Lifetime and A&E documentary, she was short and calm about it: “Honestly, this whole thing was blown way out of proportion. And, of course, it was an accident that should not have happened, but everyone is looking for someone to blame and that’s got to stop.” Then: “Justin and I are very good friends, and we will always be very good friends. We spoke just a few days ago. He and I have moved on, and it’s time for everyone else to do the same” (ABC News).
The same film revealed that right after the Super Bowl, Justin called and asked if he should make a statement. Her answer: “Listen, I don’t want any drama for you. They’re aiming all of this at me. So I said, ‘If I were you, I wouldn’t say anything’” (Entertainment Weekly). She also turned down his invitation to perform with him at the 2018 Super Bowl, saying it would be “dredging up the past” (ABC News).

Justin’s 2021 apology, and the Britney question
In February 2021, after the documentary Framing Britney Spears turned his fans against him, Timberlake posted a long statement on Instagram: “I specifically want to apologize to Britney Spears and Janet Jackson both individually, because I care for and respect these women and I know I failed” (Rolling Stone). He also wrote that he had “benefited from a system that condones misogyny and racism” (The Guardian).
That is why the second line in Variety’s story matters as much as the first. A source says Justin “discusses some of former girlfriend Britney Spears’ recent comments” in the new series (Variety). Variety didn’t say which comments. Britney’s hub, and her side of their story, is here.
Janet now: still the hottest woman in the room
Sixty and still doing it in leather. Janet opened her Las Vegas residency on Dec. 30, 2024, in a gold suit, a corset and sheer white looks, and she has never been shy about her body: her 1993 Rolling Stone cover, topless with a pair of hands over her breasts, is still one of the most iconic covers the magazine ever ran. The Super Bowl wasn’t the first time she showed skin. It was the first time somebody else decided when.
