Verity Sex Scenes: Dakota Johnson, Anne Hathaway and the Bathtub Kiss

Dakota Johnson and Anne Hathaway in the Verity bathtub fantasy scene (1:16). The other Verity sex scenes are further down the page.

Verity is the Colleen Hoover thriller everybody went to see in October, and it is Dakota Johnson’s most openly erotic film since Fifty Shades. Dakota Johnson plays Lowen Ashleigh, a broke writer hired to finish the bestselling series of Verity Crawford, Anne Hathaway, after a car crash leaves Verity unable to move or speak. Josh Hartnett is Jeremy, the husband in the middle. Lowen moves into their remote Vermont house, finds Verity’s private manuscript about her sex life, and slowly starts sleeping in her bed, in every sense. I have put every Verity sex scene worth watching on one page: 4 clips in HD, each with its length and what is going on, from Lowen stripping in a restroom to the bathtub fantasy where Jeremy turns into Verity mid-kiss. For the rest of their careers, see my Dakota Johnson nude scenes and my Anne Hathaway page.

Verity Sex Scene: Dakota Johnson’s Bathtub Fantasy and the Kiss With Anne Hathaway (1:16)

The Crawford house, Vermont | With: Dakota Johnson, Anne Hathaway, Josh Hartnett

Lowen sinks into the rock-carved tub in the Crawford house, the water glowing a cold, milky blue, and lets her hand wander while her eyes close. Dakota Johnson is naked under the water with her knees up and one arm across her chest, and the film keeps cutting away from her, to Verity lying motionless in her bed, to the dark library, and back to Lowen’s face as she gives in to what she has been thinking about all week. In her head she is on the green sofa with Jeremy, his hands in her hair. Then the light turns red, the bath turns into something closer to a fever dream, and when the kiss breaks it is not Jeremy holding her face any more. It is Verity, red lipstick, black nails and a slow, knowing smile, and Lowen kisses her back. It is the most talked-about minute of the film for good reason: it is hot, it is unsettling, and it says more about what Lowen really wants than any line of dialogue.

Why does this one come first? Because it is the scene that got everyone talking when the first trailer dropped, and it is not even in the book. Michael Showalter told The Independent the kiss was Hathaway and Johnson’s own idea: what if Lowen is kissing Josh and Josh turns into Anne. He said they agreed to cut it if it did not work. It worked. I have stopped the clip just before the kiss turns into a bite, so what you get is the fantasy and the kiss.

Every Other Verity Sex Scene

The bathtub gets the headlines, but the rest of the film is built around three more charged moments, one for each corner of the triangle. Here they are.

Dakota Johnson Strips to Her Bra in the Restroom (0:12)

Verity (2026) | With: Dakota Johnson, Josh Hartnett

The first time Lowen and Jeremy meet, she is covered in a stranger’s blood. A cyclist has just been killed in front of her on a Manhattan street, and this tall man in a dark suit walks her into a coffee-shop restroom to clean up. She peels off her ruined top right there, down to a pale blue lace bra, and scrubs at her skin over the sink while he stands by the door and very politely does not look. Then he hands her the white shirt off his own back. Twelve seconds, and the whole film is already in it: blood, a borrowed shirt, and a stranger she cannot stop thinking about.

Anne Hathaway and Josh Hartnett in Verity’s Manuscript (1:22)

Verity (2026) | With: Anne Hathaway, Josh Hartnett, Dakota Johnson

Lowen finds Verity’s secret autobiography in the office, and as she reads, the film shows us the marriage Verity describes, in bed and in close-up. Anne Hathaway and Josh Hartnett tangle under the sheets in warm lamplight, their bodies framed in the big bedroom window, while Verity’s own words drift across the screen, the line about gripping the headboard and biting down on it to stifle her screams. Between the memories we cut back to Johnson in the half-dark, turning the pages with her lips slightly parted. It is the scene that explains the bite marks Lowen noticed on the headboard when she first arrived, and it ends on Hathaway looking up from the pillow, lipstick perfect, like a woman who knows exactly who is reading.

When Lowen and Jeremy finally give in, she does not just sleep with Verity’s husband, she does it in Verity’s style. It starts fast and dark, Hartnett shirtless over her in the lamplight and a flash of red lace as they roll across the bed. Then she turns, grips the wooden headboard with both hands and sinks her teeth into it, leaving her own bite next to the old one. The camera stays on her face in the amber light for the last twenty seconds, hair falling forward, jaw tight. Johnson told Entertainment Weekly that she and Hathaway shot their headboard bites on separate days, and seeing the two scenes back to back is the best way to watch this one.

What I Left Out

A few clips of this film are floating around that I did not use. Three are shorter, lower-quality cuts of the same bathtub kiss that is already at the top of this page, and one is a single frozen frame. I also skipped a four-second overhead shot of Lowen huddled in the shower with her hands over her face, because it is about distress, not desire, and a bathroom scene between Verity and Jeremy that is filmed through a half-open doorway by someone the clip never shows. Everything on this page is between adults who want to be there, which in a film this twisted is saying something.

Why Verity Works

Critics were mostly unkind, and plenty of them said the film plays it too safe for an erotic thriller. I get it, but I think they missed what is good here. Every sex scene in Verity is also a clue. The bite marks on the headboard, the manuscript Lowen cannot stop reading, the bath where her fantasy changes partners: they all ask the same question, which is whether Lowen wants Jeremy or wants to become Verity. Johnson plays it with the same sly, half-amused hunger she brought to Fifty Shades, and Hathaway, who barely moves for most of her screen time, is genuinely frightening in the few seconds she is allowed to smile.

Dakota Johnson’s other daring roles, from all three Fifty Shades films to Suspiria, are on my Dakota Johnson nude scenes page, and Anne Hathaway’s sexiest roles are collected on my Anne Hathaway page. Critics kept comparing this film to The Housemaid, so the Housemaid sex scene with Sydney Sweeney is the obvious next stop.
