I’ve been behind the camera since 2001 and shot more than 2,000 scenes, and the strongest body I’ve seen this week wasn’t on a set. It was a New Jersey mom running 26.2 miles through New York with her scars out.

Lauren Spiezia, 33, ran the 2026 TCS New York City Marathon topless on Sunday, Nov. 1, to show her mastectomy and reconstruction scars after beating breast cancer. She finished in 4:54:04, according to race results reported by Newsweek and Daily Voice (Newsweek, Daily Voice). The New York Post put her on the timeline the same week, and the quote-tweet that asked “The message? Look at me” blew past a million views on X (NY Post, ING2Firebrand).

Why she ran with nothing on top

Spiezia was diagnosed at 31 after doctors told her she was too young for a mammogram. She has said she had stage 2 triple-negative cancer in one breast and stage 1 hormone-receptor-positive cancer in the other, then went through chemotherapy, immunotherapy, a bilateral mastectomy and reconstruction, and later learned she carries a BRCA2 mutation (Newsweek, Daily Voice).

She ran with Team LakLak under Memorial Sloan Kettering’s Fred’s Team, with a QR code on her back pointing to a free Tyrer-Cuzick breast-cancer risk assessment. New York State law allows women to be topless in public, and she has said her medical team backed the plan. She used body tape for support after reconstruction and still finished the full 26.2 miles (Newsweek).

NICO’S TAKE

"Nico

Hollywood pays people to fake bravery. Lauren Spiezia did the real version on the biggest running stage in America.

I’ve directed women who were terrified of a single topless frame. She ran past hospitals, tourists and a million phone cameras with the scars the disease left, and turned them into the point. That isn’t shock content. That’s control.

My take after 2,000+ scenes: the body that survives is hotter than the body that never got hit. Lauren didn’t ask for permission to be seen. She made the city look.
