The Substance Nude Scenes: Demi Moore, Margaret Qualley and the Mirror Everyone Remembers

Margaret Qualley as Sue in the mirror scene from The Substance (1:56). Every other nude and sexy scene from the film is below, in order.

Every so often a film comes along that people cannot stop talking about, and in 2024 it was The Substance. Coralie Fargeat’s body-horror satire puts Demi Moore in the role of her life as Elisabeth Sparkle, a fading TV fitness star, and Margaret Qualley as Sue, the younger, flawless version of her that a black-market drug creates. Both of them go fully nude, both of them are fearless, and the film turned Qualley’s pink leotard into one of the most replayed clips of the year. I have put every worthwhile The Substance nude scene on one page: 9 clips in HD, each with its length and the story behind it, starting with the one everybody searches for. For the rest of their careers, see my Margaret Qualley nude scenes and Demi Moore nude scenes pages.

The Substance Nude Scene: Margaret Qualley in the Mirror (1:56)

This is the scene everyone means when they talk about The Substance. Sue has just climbed out of Elisabeth’s back, and she staggers across the white tiled bathroom, wet hair stuck to her face, to the mirror. Then she stops and looks. Margaret Qualley plays it with almost no words: a hand on her chest, a slow turn to check her back, a smile that grows as she realises the body in the glass is hers. Coralie Fargeat holds the camera on her for nearly two minutes, completely nude, and it never feels cheap, because the whole film depends on you believing this is the most perfect version of a woman anyone has ever seen. You believe it.

Why does this one come first? Because it is the moment the whole film is built on. Everything Sue does afterwards, the job, the billboard, the men, the fight for the spotlight, starts with a naked woman meeting herself in a bathroom mirror and liking what she sees. It is also the longest nude scene in the film, almost two minutes without a single cutaway to clothes, and the one that sent her name trending all over again when the film reached streaming.

Every Other Nude and Sexy Scene in The Substance

The rest of the film in order, from Elisabeth’s last days on TV to Sue’s big night. I left out the violence and the gore at the end on purpose: the bathroom fight between the two women, Elisabeth’s ruined body and the monster on the New Year’s stage are great horror, but they belong to a different kind of website. What is left is the beautiful part.

Demi Moore in a Blue Leotard: The Aerobics Show (0:15)

Before anything strange happens, there is Elisabeth Sparkle doing what made her famous: leading a TV aerobics class in a shiny blue leotard, high ponytail, big smile, a row of dancers kicking behind her in red and white. It lasts 15 seconds and it sets up the whole film. This is the woman Hollywood decides is too old on her 50th birthday, and Demi Moore, who was around sixty when she shot it, looks like she could teach the class for another twenty years.

Demi Moore Nude in the Bathroom: The First Dose (1:32)

Elisabeth comes home, locks the door, takes off everything and gets into the shower, and this is where Demi Moore does the bravest work of her career. We see her full body from behind in the bright white bathroom, then in the mirror, studying herself with the kind of cold honesty most people only use when they are alone. She picks up the syringe, injects the green serum and drops to the tiles. What follows is the fall and the shaking that start the change, filmed so close you can see every muscle tense. It is not sexy in the usual way. It is better: a movie star close to sixty choosing to be completely exposed, on purpose, for a film about exactly that.

Margaret Qualley Nude in the Shower: Sue’s First Shower (0:26)

Shot from straight above, Sue stands under the water for the first time, and the film lets her enjoy it. Head tipped back, hands running down her neck and her chest, her stomach, her hips, like she is introducing herself to her own skin. It is twenty-six seconds of pure close-ups and steam, and Fargeat’s camera is clearly as fascinated with her as she is.

Margaret Qualley in Red Briefs: Sue’s First Morning (1:20)

The morning after her birth, Sue walks around Elisabeth’s huge apartment like she owns it, and in a way she does. Red briefs, then a tight yellow T-shirt, bare legs, the whole of Los Angeles behind the window. She dances alone in front of the glass with her arms up, checks the casting call for Elisabeth’s old job on the computer and practises her smile. There is a quick cut back to Elisabeth lying unconscious on the bathroom floor, just to remind you what this costs, and then Sue is out the door to steal the show.

Margaret Qualley in a Pink Swimsuit: The Photo Shoot (0:16)

Sue gets the job, and this is the first proof. A photographer circles her while she poses in a tiny pink swimsuit, all hips and attitude, and a few seconds later the result goes up as a giant billboard over the city: a new show, a new face. Sue stands at the window and watches it, and Elisabeth’s old life officially belongs to someone else. Short, glossy and very pink.

Margaret Qualley in a Pink Leotard: Pump It Up (0:39)

If you have seen one clip from The Substance, it is probably this one. Sue’s new TV workout, Pump It Up, with giant pink letters on the wall, a crew of dancers and Margaret Qualley in a high-cut pink leotard that leaves almost nothing to guess. The camera does not even pretend to be watching the routine. It goes straight to her hips, her backside and her stomach as she bounces, stretches and grinds through the moves, and that is exactly the point Fargeat is making about how the industry looks at women. It also happens to be the most replayed scene in the film, and I understand why.

Margaret Qualley Sex Scene: Sue Brings a Man Home (1:00)

The only real sex scene in the film, and it is all on Sue’s terms. She is in a black snakeskin catsuit with her hair pulled back in a long braid, and she brings a guy home from a night out, and within seconds the two of them are tangled up on a curved leather sofa, Sue kissing him like she has done it a thousand times. Lots of tight close-ups of mouths, hands on leather and her face lit red and blue by the city lights. It is also the night she breaks the rules and skips the switch, so enjoy it while it lasts, because the bill arrives in the morning.

Margaret Qualley in a Blue Gown: The New Year’s Eve Show (0:44)

Sue finally gets the night Elisabeth always wanted: the big New Year’s Eve special. A stage full of dancers in pink feathers, spotlights everywhere, and Sue in the middle in a pale blue gown, singing into the microphone with a huge smile. This is Sue at her absolute peak, the clean and glamorous version, before the film goes completely off the rails. What happens next on that stage belongs to the horror fans, and we are not showing it.

Why The Substance Is Still One of the Most Searched Films

Most films with this much nudity get filed away as provocative and forgotten. The Substance went the other way: it won Best Screenplay at Cannes, picked up five Oscar nominations including Best Picture and Best Actress, and won the Oscar for makeup and hairstyling. Demi Moore, who spent decades being judged for her body, won a Golden Globe and a SAG Award for a role that asked her to show all of it, at nearly sixty, in harsh white light. And Margaret Qualley, who until then was known for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Maid, became the face of the most talked-about scenes of the year. It is a film about how Hollywood looks at women, and the reason people keep coming back to it is that it dares you to look too.

About The Substance (2024)

It premiered at the Cannes Film Festival on May 19, 2024 and opened in the US and UK on September 20, 2024, released by Mubi. It follows Elisabeth Sparkle, who is fired from her long-running aerobics show by the producer Harvey on her 50th birthday and turns to a black-market drug that creates a younger version of her, Sue. The two have to switch bodies every seven days, and the rules do not stay respected for long.
