The Deuce Sex Scenes: Maggie Gyllenhaal, Emily Meade and Margarita Levieva

The Deuce is David Simon and George Pelecanos’s HBO drama about 42nd Street in the 1970s and 1980s, when the sex trade moved off the sidewalk and into peep shows, massage parlors and porn studios. It ran for three seasons from 2017 to 2019, with Maggie Gyllenhaal as Candy, a street worker who becomes a director, and James Franco playing twin brothers who front for the Mafia. Because the whole show is about the sex business, it is one of the most nude series HBO has made. Candy in Bed: Maggie Gyllenhaal Off the Clock (2:31)

Season 1, episode 5 | With: Maggie Gyllenhaal

Season 1, episode 5. For once Candy is not working. She is in her own bed in a warm, lamplit room with the blinds half shut, and the man next to her is someone she actually wants there. The clip runs well over two minutes and it takes its time: the two of them tangled up under the sheets, then lying back afterwards, Candy stretched out naked on her stomach with her face in the pillow and that tired, satisfied look Maggie Gyllenhaal does better than anyone. It is the warmest scene the show ever gives her, and because the rest of her season is cold hotel rooms and cheap film sets, it hits harder than any of the porn-shoot scenes.

Why put this one first? Most of the sex in The Deuce is somebody’s job, shot flat and unglamorous on purpose. This is the one long scene where the show’s lead gets to be a woman in bed with a man she likes, and Gyllenhaal, who also produced the series, makes it the most honest sex scene in three seasons.

Candy Steps In: The Viking Shoot (0:56)

Season 1, episode 2. Candy agrees to fill in for a friend on a cheap porn short, and this is how she meets the business she will end up running. Two blondes in braids and Viking helmets on a striped bed, a director with a handheld camera, hot lights and a crew that clearly does this every week. Gyllenhaal plays it half as a joke and half as a woman taking notes: watch her eyes go from the bed to the camera. The topless shots come near the end, under the lights, and you can see the idea forming that she could do this better from the other side.

Candy the Morning After (0:56)

Season 1, episode 7. A nicer hotel room than Candy is used to: crystal glasses, a breakfast tray, white sheets. She lies naked across the bed on her stomach, propped on her elbows, while a man moves around the room behind her. Then she sits up and looks out at nothing, topless, and you can tell she is already somewhere else. A short clip, under a minute, but it is one of Gyllenhaal’s most natural nude scenes in the series.

Candy Laughs in Bed (1:24)

Season 3, episode 3. By 1984 Eileen is a working director with her own projects, and this is her off duty: in bed on pale green sheets with a bald, bearded man, giggling, teasing and pulling him down to her. It is playful from start to finish, with big earrings, a big laugh and a lot of skin, and it is a nice reminder that the show let Candy have fun too. The clip is shot in HD and it is one of the clearest scenes on this page.

Abby on the Couch (1:11)

Season 1, episode 1. Before she ever walks into Vincent’s bar, Abby is an NYU student bored out of her mind with her comfortable life. This is the pilot scene that tells you everything about her: she rides a man on a battered couch in a sunlit apartment, then gets up, topless, lights a cigarette and leans against the window looking more bored than ever. Abby and Vincent in Bed (1:31)

Abby and Vincent, played by James Franco, are the couple the whole series keeps coming back to, and this is them at their easiest: lying together on white sheets after sex, talking, laughing and reaching for the lamp. It is filmed from above at first and then from the side of the bed, with Levieva topless the whole way through. No drama, no plot, just two people who like each other, which on The Deuce is rare.

Lori and C.C. in Bed (3:20)

Season 1, episode 2. Lori has only just arrived in New York from Minnesota, and C.C., played by Gary Carr, has already decided she is his. This is the bed scene where he wins her over: the two of them naked under the sheets, lighting up and talking in a cheap room. Emily Meade is topless for almost all of it, sitting up against the headboard with a cigarette while C.C. talks. It is the longest clip on the page, and it is the start of the most important relationship in Lori’s story.

Lori Backstage With Candy (1:09)

Season 1, episode 7. The two stars of the show in one dressing room. Lori is getting ready for a shoot in a maid’s costume with a frilly cap, and Candy is at the mirror next to her in a black corset. Lori pulls the top of the uniform down and stands there topless while they talk shop, the director wanders in and out, and Candy watches her with a look that is half big sister, half businesswoman. A small backstage moment, but it is the friendship that drives the next two seasons.

Season 3, episode 2. Lori has gone west to make movies in California, and the change is obvious from the first shot: sun, palm trees, a turquoise pool and a crew in shorts and cowboy hats. She is shooting a scene on a lounger by the water while the boom mic hangs overhead. The topless shots come in the middle of the take, in full daylight. It is a bright, glossy scene, and that is the point: this is what porn looks like in 1984, a long way from the Times Square back rooms of season one.

Darlene and the Man in the Diaper (1:12)

Season 1, episode 1. Darlene sits topless on the end of a hotel bed while her client, a large, cheerful man, potters about the room in nothing but a diaper. He wants to be looked after, she wants to get paid, and the whole thing is played for quiet comedy. Dominique Fishback is topless in profile for most of the clip and barely reacts to any of it, which is what makes it funny. It is one of the most talked-about moments from the pilot.

Melissa and Barbara Between Shifts (0:53)

Season 1, episode 4. Two of the working girls off duty in a shared room: Melissa, played by Olivia Luccardi, and Barbara, played by Kayla Foster. They lie naked on the bed in green lamplight, kissing and touching, then roll apart and Melissa sits up topless to count the money. Season 3, episode 1. Melissa has moved from the street to the porn sets, and here she is on a striped mattress in front of a video camera, completely nude, while the director and crew watch from the shadows. The clip cuts between the take and the grainy VHS image on the monitor, which is the whole story of season three: video replacing film. Olivia Luccardi has the boldest nude scene on this page.

Sandra in Bed (0:51)

Season 1, episode 8. Sandra Washington, the newspaper reporter digging into the police and the street trade, gets a rare night off from the story. The clip starts in near darkness and then the lamp comes on: Sandra sits up topless in bed beside her lover, reading, and they talk. Natalie Paul’s only nude scene in the series, and a nice quiet one.

Frankie and the Redhead (0:56)

Season 1, episode 1. The pilot introduces Frankie, Vincent’s gambling twin, exactly as you would expect: in a messy room with a redhead, played by Amber Skye Noyes. They have sex on the bed, then she lies back naked while he gets up and wanders off without a care in the world. It is the scene that tells you which twin is going to cause all the trouble, and it is one of the most explicit moments of season one.

What I Left Out

The Deuce does not look away from how ugly the street could be, and a lot of the clips that circulate under its name are scenes of pimps or clients hurting the women. None of those are here: I left out every scene where Candy, Lori, Ashley or anyone else is attacked or pushed around, and anything where it was not clear the woman wanted to be there. I also skipped a few clips that have more costume than nudity (a classroom-set porn shoot, the peep-show kiss between Shay and Irene, a night shoot in a taxi), duplicate uploads of the same scenes, and some low-resolution club and street footage. What is left is every scene where the women are on a set, at work or at home and in control of it.

Why The Deuce Is Still Worth Watching

Critics loved it from the start. Season 1 sits at 93% on Rotten Tomatoes and season 2 at 99%, with the consensus calling Gyllenhaal’s work a tour de force, and The Guardian gave the first season five stars. Gyllenhaal was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Drama Series. The nudity was never there just to fill time. The show is about the moment sex became an industry, and every scene above is a different stop on that road, from a cheap loop shot in a back room to a glossy video shoot by a pool in California. It was also one of the first series to bring in an intimacy coordinator, Alicia Rodis, after Emily Meade suggested it, and you can feel the care in how these scenes are put together.

The Deuce was created for HBO by David Simon and George Pelecanos and takes its name from the old nickname for 42nd Street between Seventh and Eighth Avenue. It ran for three seasons and 25 episodes, from September 10, 2017 to October 28, 2019, and was shot in New York City. Season 1 is set in 1971 and 1972, season 2 jumps to 1977 and 1978, and season 3 to 1984 and 1985. Candy is loosely based on the adult film actress and director Candida Royalle, and Lori on the star Shauna Grant. The whole series streams on HBO Max.
