Rome (HBO) Sex Scenes: Polly Walker, Cleopatra and More

Rome is HBO’s blood-and-marble epic about the fall of the Republic, created by Bruno Heller, John Milius and William J. MacDonald. It ran for two seasons from 2005 to 2007, with Polly Walker as Atia, James Purefoy as Mark Antony, Ciarán Hinds as Julius Caesar, Indira Varma as Niobe and Lyndsey Marshal as Cleopatra. The show put a lot of sex on screen — palace affairs, marriages, political seductions — and not all of it was willing. I have kept only the clearly adult, willing scenes: Atia taking what she wants, Cleopatra with Caesar and Antony, and Niobe with her husband. Eight clips in HD, each with its length.

Atia and Timon: The Stolen Eagle (0:50)

The pilot opens Atia’s world the way the rest of the series will keep it: she wants a horse, she wants a man, and she does not wait. Polly Walker as Atia of the Julii takes Timon, the horse trader, to bed while her household carries on around them. She is on top, fully nude, curly hair falling forward, completely in charge of the moment. It is short, sharp and exactly how the show announced that Roman aristocratic sex would not be shy.

Why this one first? Atia is the engine of half the intrigue in Rome, and this is the first time we see how she uses her body the same way she uses her money and her name — as a tool she already owns.

It is one of her warmest scenes in season 1 and a reminder that for Atia, sex and politics were never far apart, but this particular stretch is just the two of them wanting each other.

Cleopatra of Egypt, played by Lyndsey Marshal, meets Julius Caesar and the series shifts to Alexandria. This short clip catches Cleopatra nude in the middle of that first encounter — cropped hair, palace walls, the queen who decided Rome’s future would run through her bed. Brief but unmistakable.

Cleopatra and Antony: Deus Impeditio (0:27)

Late season 2, Cleopatra and Mark Antony in Egypt. Lyndsey Marshal is topless, Purefoy shirtless, the two of them locked in a hard kiss against bright palace colors while an attendant watches from the back of the room. It is the peak of their on-screen heat and one of the clearest nude scenes Marshal has in the series.

Cleopatra: A Necessary Fiction (0:23)

Cleopatra moving through her palace in a sheer white dress, Egyptian murals behind her, completely at ease being looked at. Not a full sex scene, but one of the show’s strongest sexy Cleopatra moments and a natural companion to the nude clips above.

Niobe and Vorenus (0:36)

Niobe, wife of Lucius Vorenus, played by Indira Varma. She washes him, they kiss, they end up in bed — a quiet, domestic scene that sits far from Atia’s palace games. Varma is nude for part of it, McKidd is fully bare, and the whole stretch feels like two adults who actually know each other. It is the warmest sex scene the show gave its working-class couple.

Niobe: Egeria (0:14)

A short Niobe nude beat from the same episode as Atia’s Antony scene. Indira Varma, brief and clear. Kept because it is a different angle on Niobe and rounds out her presence on the page.

What I Left Out

I left out every scene that turns on slavery, coercion or political force. That means all of Gaia (Zuleikha Robinson), the slave who uses sex as leverage inside Vorenus’s household; Octavia’s encounters (Kerry Condon), which Atia engineers for politics; Servilia’s Utica scene with Octavia; unnamed brothel cuts; and any compilation reel that pulled in the wrong actor from early-season Octavian footage. I also skipped body-double-only flashes, sub-15-second cuts, and anything where the sex and the abuse are the same moment. What is left is every scene where the nudity is part of a willing adult moment.

Why Rome Still Gets Talked About

Rome was HBO’s big bet before Game of Thrones: two seasons, a huge Italian production, and a cast that made the late Republic feel lived in. Walker, Purefoy, Hinds, Varma and Marshal gave the sex the same weight the show gave the battles — as part of how power moved through the city. Some of those scenes are ugly on purpose. The ones on this page are the ones worth rewatching.
