Most people get one birthday dress. Kim Kardashian got two, both 30 years old, both made of metal, and she swapped them halfway through dinner. To celebrate turning 46 this week, Kim Kardashian arrived at Baldi at the Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills in an emerald-green Paco Rabanne chainmail minidress and left in a red version of the same design, Page Six reports. Both are original haute couture pieces from Rabanne’s fall-winter 1995 collection, chosen for her by the house’s new creative director, Olivier Rousteing, according to Vogue and Rabanne’s own Instagram.

I’m Nico Grey. I make adult films, I run NicoGrey.com and Scandal Planet, and the rest of my time goes into investment, crypto and AI companies. I also know a power move when a 46-year-old wears a museum piece to a steakhouse. Here’s exactly what she wore, who picked it, and why it matters for his first Rabanne show.

Rabanne posted the first look itself, with a thank-you to stylist Law Roach. Page Six and XFashion posted the photos from the night.

What happened

Kim’s family dinner had her mom Kris Jenner, sisters Kylie Jenner, Khloé Kardashian and Kourtney Kardashian, and her brother Rob, who made a rare public appearance, Harper’s Bazaar reported. Inside, she blew out the candles on a giant raspberry-covered cake, Page Six said.

The clothes were the story. Rabanne posted the green look on Instagram as “an original Paco Rabanne haute couture creation from the Fall-Winter 95 collection, selected by @olivier_rousteing,” and thanked stylist Law Roach. Rousteing told Vogue: “For me, fashion has always been about connecting the past, the present and the future.” One fan post of the two looks has passed 560,000 views on X.

Nico GreyNICO’S TAKE

Kim, darling. Most people turn 46 and order a cake. You raided a Paris couture vault, wore 1995 chainmail with a slit high enough to flash the boyshorts, and changed couture before the cake came out. That’s not a birthday. That’s a product launch.

Olivier hands you the keys to Rabanne five months before his own first show. Law Roach dresses you. Lewis got the string-top preview in the Philippines first. Three powerful men around one birthday, and not one of them is running it.

Here’s my challenge: next year, wear it without the boyshorts. You built an empire on the world not looking away, after all. The full Kim file is on her hub →

The dresses are 30 years old. The fascination is older. Her Scandal Planet hub has everything on one page, and her sisters and Paris Hilton are a click away.

The two dresses, look by look

  • What they are: looks 21 and 22 from Paco Rabanne’s fall-winter 1995 haute couture show, per Vogue. Page Six dates the collection to fall 1996, but Rabanne’s own post says “Fall-Winter 95,” so we’re going with the house.
  • Look 1, the arrival: emerald-green metal mesh with crystal trim, a plunging neckline and a high center slit that showed the black boyshorts underneath, Page Six and Harper’s Bazaar report. On her head: a chainmail headpiece set with oversized green stones. On her feet: black Paris Texas stiletto mules, $745.
  • Look 2, the exit: the same cut in red, with a smaller red-beaded headpiece and an oversized cross pendant, styled the way it appeared on the runway 30 years ago, Page Six says. Vogue calls the color fuchsia; Page Six calls it blood red. Both dresses have batwing sleeves and crystal belts at the waist.
  • Who did what: Rousteing picked the pieces, and Law Roach, whom Page Six calls her new stylist, put them together.

The detail that makes this more than a cute outfit change is that it’s the same dress twice. She didn’t switch styles at the table, only colors. Green for the cameras on the way in, red for the cameras on the way out, and two sets of photos from one dinner.

Why Olivier Rousteing picked them

Rousteing was named creative director of Rabanne in July and will show his first collection for the house in March, Page Six reports. Before that, he ran Balmain for 14 years, and Kim was one of his regulars: she starred in a Balmain campaign in 2014 and wore the label to the 2016 Met Gala. Dressing his most famous client in the founder’s own archive, before he has shown a single look of his own, is about as loud a preview as a designer can get.

Harper’s Bazaar also pointed out where the chainmail birthday idea comes from: Kim’s old friend and former employer, Paris Hilton.

Kim’s archive month, in order

The Rabanne dresses capped a run of old-but-unforgettable looks in October:

  • Mid-October, the Philippines: an early birthday trip with boyfriend Lewis Hamilton, with an oceanside dinner in a Mark Fast macramé top “made of little more than strings,” Page Six reported. Philstar covered the trip too.
  • Oct. 17, Academy Museum Gala: a 1951 Balenciaga. Her own X post, “1951 BALENCIAGA for the Academy Museum Gala,” passed 1 million views.
  • This week, her 46th: two 1995 Rabanne couture minis in one night.

What to watch next

Two things are worth following. First, Rousteing’s first Rabanne show in March: if the 1995 shapes come back, Kim wore the preview. Second, Lewis Hamilton, who isn’t named in any of the dinner reports but got the first birthday trip. A joint red carpet would be the next step. Until then, start with Kim’s hub.
