Michael Cera plays Jamie, an obnoxious American in Chile who wants to find the San Pedro cactus and brew it for a trip to the coast. At a party he invites a free-spirited hippie who calls herself Crystal Fairy along for the ride, regrets it immediately, and spends the film being mean to her. Hoffmann and Cera really did take mescaline during the shoot, and her performance got an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best Female Lead.

The scene everyone remembers from Crystal Fairy. She steps out of the shower in a cheap Chilean hotel room, towel round her hair and nothing else, and wanders about chatting while Jamie (Michael Cera) and the three Chilean brothers sit on the beds with their drinks and a guitar. She is completely relaxed and they are not, and Cera spends two minutes trying very hard to look anywhere else. Full frontal, lots of it, and played for laughs rather than heat.

Crystal Fairy walks naked through the desert (1:25)

Out on the road trip, Crystal Fairy strips off and walks alone across rocky Chilean hills in the late sun, hair blowing, completely at peace. Then she comes across a cruel nickname for her spelled out in white stones on the ground, and the mood drops. The last stretch is wide shots of her standing naked on the flat desert floor while a man in a plaid shirt walks over. Beautiful to look at and a bit heartbreaking.

Soloway wrote Ali for Hoffmann after seeing her on Louie. Ali is the restless baby of a Los Angeles family whose parent comes out as a trans woman, Maura (Jeffrey Tambor), and over 42 episodes she drifts through jobs, lovers and identities. Hoffmann was nominated for the supporting actress Emmy in 2015 and 2016, and the show treats nudity as part of everyday life. Ali and her oldest friend Syd (Carrie Brownstein) finally stop pretending. It opens wide, the two of them lying on a rumpled bed in soft lamplight, then the camera moves in close: Ali smiling down at Syd, bare shoulders, a long slow kiss, hands in hair and under the sheet. Under a minute, but it is the most romantic sex scene Hoffmann ever got on the show, and the chemistry is real.

The hot tub with Leslie, season 2 episode 6 (3:27)

The longest clip on this page. A night party at the home of Leslie (Cherry Jones), the poet and professor Ali has fallen for, and everyone ends up naked in a big wooden hot tub on the deck. Ali sits in the steaming water with her shoulders and chest just above the surface, laughing, flirting and pulling faces while a lighter flicks in the dark, and she keeps edging closer to Leslie. Very little happens and it is still the sexiest mood in season two.

The red tutu dance for Dale, season 1 episode 7 (0:51)

Ali puts on a show for Dale (Ian Harvie), who sits on a plaid couch with a beer in a wood-panelled living room. She is in a red and white corset and a frilly red tutu, all red lipstick and grin, and she sways and teases in front of an old television set. Then she drops her knickers to her ankles and flips the tutu up for a second. Cheeky, funny and very Ali.

The spa day with Sarah, season 2 episode 5 (2:02)

Ali and her big sister Sarah (Amy Landecker) take a day at a women’s spa. It starts with Ali face down on a massage table, oiled up, eyes half open, then moves to a tiled steam room where she sits topless in the fog, and ends in the pool, the two sisters bobbing in the water and bickering. More naked than sexy, but it is a lovely, lived-in scene, and Hoffmann and Landecker really do feel like sisters.

Ali undresses for bed, season 1 episode 1 (0:35)

From the very first episode. Ali comes home, kicks off her clothes in the doorway, flops naked face down across the bed, then gets up and walks to the tall mirror on the wall, so you see her from behind and in the reflection at the same time. Short and matter-of-fact, the way Transparent always did nudity, and it tells you a lot about Ali before she says a word.

A small, easy scene. Ali sprawls in a battered armchair in a sunny room with a mug of coffee, legs up, in a loose white basketball jersey that keeps falling open at the side, chatting with a friend across the room. No real nudity beyond the side view, but it is a good look at how comfortable Hoffmann is in her own skin on camera.

Caroline in the bathtub, season 4 episode 10 (2:12)

From Home Birth, the season four finale, the episode that got Hoffmann her Emmy nomination. Caroline, Adam’s unpredictable sister, is in labour in the bathtub with candles everywhere, and Laird sits on the edge in his knitted hat while Hannah hovers in the doorway. It starts out calm and chatty, then the pain takes over: Caroline on all fours in the water, sliding under the surface, and finally Adam lifting her out of the tub. Not a sexy scene at all, but it is the one fans of the show look for, and it is fearless acting.

What I Left Out

I kept this page to scenes that are actually worth watching. Gaby Hoffmann was born Gabrielle Mary Antonia Hoffmann on January 8, 1982, in New York City. Her mother is Viva, the actress, writer and former Andy Warhol superstar, and her father was the soap actor Anthony Herrera.
