She’s in a red-and-gold corset that looks borrowed from a carnival fortune teller, with a black thong that does very little work. She turns away from the crowd to sing, glances at the screen behind the band, and there it is. One hand goes back to cover it. She spins round with her mouth open like a woman who just saw her ex at the bar.
Then she grabs the mic. “I look up at the screen and see my ass. I was like, it’s gone,” she says, according to the TikTok StubHub posted (HuffPost). Then she runs her hands down the bodysuit to check everything is still there, laughs, and goes straight into “Love Me Anyway” (Extra). Why this clip still works a year later
I’ve seen a lot of women perform almost naked. Most of them act like they’re daring you to look. Chappell did something stranger: for one second she looked like a normal person who caught her reflection in a shop window and didn’t recognise herself. Then the drag queen came back. That second is the whole show.
It’s also why the clip refuses to die. A planned outfit that looks like a disaster, a disaster that turns out to be the plan, and a woman who’d rather make a joke than make a statement. Reality Tea called it the best possible way to handle a wardrobe malfunction that wasn’t one (Reality Tea). I’d call it the most honest thing a pop star said on stage that year.
Here’s my confession. I spent twenty-five years behind a camera telling women where to stand so the light hits them right. Chappell didn’t need me. She needed a Jumbotron, a thong and a reaction you can’t rehearse.
