Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan (2010) is a ballet thriller about pressure, rivalry and a mind coming apart, and the Black Swan sex scene between Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis is still one of the most searched moments of its decade. The clip runs exactly two minutes and stays inside Nina’s pink bedroom in the apartment she shares with her mother, the one place in the film she thinks is safe. It opens with Nina glancing back at the door, nervous, before Lily pulls her into a slow, searching kiss, hands in each other’s hair. They fall back onto the bed, and Lily works her way down beneath the sheets while Nina grips the pillows. Aronofsky cuts between close-ups of Nina’s face, Lily’s smile in the half-light and Lily’s bare back with its dark wing tattoo, until Nina is sprawled on the polka-dot pillows, gasping, completely letting go for the first time in the story. It is shot hand-held and dreamlike, so it feels as much like a fever as a hookup, and that is exactly why it hits so hard.

Looking for a Black Swan nude scene? The scene is more about heat than skin: Kunis is in a black bra with her back exposed, Portman wears a thin camisole, and the camera stays close on faces, hands and bodies moving together. It earned the film its “strong sexual content” note in the R rating.

Nina Sayers, a dancer at the New York City Ballet, wins the lead in a new production of Swan Lake and soon finds herself competing with Lily, a newcomer who seems born to dance the darker Black Swan role. Aronofsky directed from a screenplay by Mark Heyman, Andrés Heinz and John McLaughlin, based on a story by Heinz. Fox Searchlight Pictures released it after it opened the Venice Film Festival on September 1, 2010, with a US limited release on December 3 and a wide release on December 17, 2010. The film is rated R for strong sexual content, disturbing violent images, language and some drug use, and runs 108 minutes. It took $332.1 million worldwide, and Portman won both the Academy Award and the Golden Globe for Best Actress for the role.
