This is the scene Blonde is most known for, and it plays out in one long take of faces and bare skin. Marilyn stands in a blue-grey room lined with bookshelves, topless, while Cass Chaplin stands behind her with his hands on her waist and Eddy Robinson Jr. leans in from the side to kiss her. The camera stays close, mostly on her face as she looks from one to the other and then closes her eyes, and the clip moves from the standing kiss to the three of them on the bed, with the light turning dimmer and warmer. Her breasts are fully visible in the first minute; after that it is mostly shoulders, hands and mouths.

Marilyn stands in a doorway in the full platinum wig and red lipstick, bare to the waist and wearing only white briefs, holding her arms across her breasts while she looks off to the side, unsure. For a few seconds she lowers her hands, then raises them again as the camera moves up to her face. There is no one else in the frame.

Waking Up Alone in a Black-and-White Bedroom (0:45)

Shot in grainy black and white, with a lamp, pill bottles and a folding table beside a rumpled bed. Marilyn lies under the sheets with her back to us for the first twenty seconds, then slowly sits up and turns, topless, with one hand braced on the mattress and her hair messy from sleep. The camera never moves in, so you get her whole upper body from across the room, and the clip ends on a close shot of her in profile in front of a dark window.

The brightest scene in the film, and the most colourful. Marilyn sits on a wooden floor with her knees pulled up, topless, in white briefs, with an open book, a single shoe and a hat box scattered around her, and looks up with a startled face at someone off-screen. The clip cuts between her and Joe DiMaggio, who stands over her in a brown suit with a nude photograph in his hand, and ends when he kneels down and kisses her. You see her breasts clearly from above for most of the first half.

Black-and-White Window Montage: Topless in the Light (1:39)

A string of black-and-white and washed-out shots rather than one scene. Marilyn stands topless with her back to a window while bright light flares around her short hair, then turns toward the camera, then appears in front of a floral wallpaper and later a dark window with the glass divided into panes. Her shoulders and bare back are the most visible, and her breasts show in the second half. It is a short cut of poses more than a story, and it is the most photographic stretch of Blonde.

What I Left Out

This page is the scenes where Marilyn is topless on screen. I skipped a dark bedroom scene where the picture is almost black, the cinema scenes where she is fully dressed, a 22-minute compilation that repeats everything above, and a few seconds of Julianne Nicholson as Gladys that show very little. Everything here is between adults.
