Nosferatu (2024) is Robert Eggers’ gothic remake of the 1922 silent classic, and it is a lot more sexual than most people expected from a vampire film. Lily-Rose Depp plays Ellen Hutter, a young wife in 1830s Germany who has been haunted since girlhood by Count Orlok, Bill Skarsgård, and who slowly realises the vampire is coming for her. Nicholas Hoult is her husband Thomas, sent to Transylvania to sell Orlok a house. Nosferatu Sex Scene: Lily-Rose Depp and Nicholas Hoult in the Bedroom (1:30)

Ellen leans over the bed in her striped dress and pulls Thomas down by his shirt, and from that second the scene does not slow down. Lily-Rose Depp is on her back with her hair spread over the pillow, Nicholas Hoult over her in an open white shirt, and the camera stays tight on her face while it shifts from hunger to something close to terror and back again. Her mouth opens, her eyes roll, she grabs at him and the sheets, and you are never quite sure whether she is with her husband or somewhere else entirely. The last half minute moves to the candlelit room by the dresser, Thomas holding her head against his chest, sweaty and shaken, like a man who has just realised he is sharing his wife with something he cannot see.

Why does this one go first? Because it is the only real sex scene between two living people in the film, and it is the one that tells you what Nosferatu is really about: a woman whose desire scares everyone around her, herself included. Eggers has called Ellen’s story one of repressed sexuality, and Depp plays it with no safety net.

This is the scene the whole film has been building to. Morning light comes through the curtains of Ellen’s bedroom, and Orlok, Bill Skarsgård under about sixty pieces of prosthetic makeup, is bent over her on the bed. Ellen lies back topless, eyes half closed, blood running down her chest from the bite, and for a long stretch Eggers lets it play like a love scene rather than a kill. She holds his rotting face in both hands and pulls him closer. It is grotesque, it is erotic, and it is the image everyone left the cinema talking about: the beauty and the corpse, finally together, with the sun on its way.

Lily-Rose Depp Topless in Bed as Orlok Comes for Her (0:17)

Shot in cold blue night light from above, Ellen lies on her back on white pillows, naked from the waist up, completely still. Then a dark shape fills the frame: Orlok’s withered back as he climbs onto the bed and covers her, his clawed hands on her body while her mouth falls open. Under twenty seconds, barely any sound, and one of the creepiest bedroom shots in recent horror.

In a candlelit bedroom Ellen is thrown around by a fit she cannot control, bent double one second and arching backwards the next, her loose nightgown sliding off and her long dark hair falling over her bare chest while the men in the room can only watch. Robert Eggers has said every bend and jerk of her body in these scenes was done for real, with no CGI and no wires. The clip ends on her face, eyes wide and mouth open, staring straight past everyone.

Lily-Rose Depp Topless Vision While Orlok Feeds on Thomas (0:06)

Night in Orlok’s castle. The count in his fur cloak reaches out of the dark towards Thomas’s bed, and for a split second the film cuts to Ellen, far away in Wisborg, standing topless in the same pose with blood running down her chest, as if she can feel every bite. Then we are back with Thomas, groaning in his sleep while the vampire drinks. Six seconds, and the clearest picture in the film of how tightly Ellen and Orlok are bound.

Katerina Bila Nude on Horseback in the Graveyard (0:54)

On Thomas’s journey through Transylvania he stumbles on a village ritual in the forest at night: a crowd with burning torches leads a white horse through the graves, and riding it is a young woman, Czech model Kateřina Bílá in her first film role, completely naked apart from her long dark hair. The horse is meant to find the vampire’s grave and refuse to cross it. Under the torchlight it is one of the most striking images in the film and Thomas’s face in the crowd says everything.

What I Left Out

Emma Corrin, who plays Anna Harding, has one brief topless shot, but it comes in the scene where Anna is found dead in bed covered in rats. It is a death scene, not a nude scene, so it is not here. I also skipped a three-second cut of the castle vision that is already inside the six-second clip above, and a second, lower-quality copy of the horseback ritual. Bill Skarsgård’s full-frontal moment as Orlok, climbing out of his coffin in the castle crypt, is not on this page either.

Nosferatu Red Carpet: Lily-Rose Depp’s Gothic Premiere Looks

The press tour started with the world premiere in Berlin on December 2, 2024, moved to London’s Odeon Luxe Leicester Square on December 4, and ended in Los Angeles on December 12. Depp did full “method dressing” in archive Chanel the whole way. In London she wore a grey Chanel couture dress from 2020 with an exaggerated collar and jewelled details under the bust, which WWD called evocative of vampiric dressing. For Los Angeles she pulled look 85 from Karl Lagerfeld’s fall 1995 Chanel couture show: a dove-grey slip gown with silver embellishment at the neckline, under a sheer, sleeveless, silver-embroidered cape tied at the throat, with her hair braided around her head. At the after-party she dropped the cape and wore just the slip. Emma Corrin matched her in a mostly sheer black Miu Miu gown with full-length gloves and a netted veil.

Nosferatu Gossip and Behind-the-Scenes Stories

Ellen was meant to be Anya Taylor-Joy, and Thomas was meant to be Harry Styles

Eggers spent years trying to get this film made. Anya Taylor-Joy, his star from The Witch, was cast back in 2017 and was still attached in 2020, with Harry Styles set to play opposite her. Styles dropped out in 2021 citing scheduling, and in September 2022 Lily-Rose Depp was announced as Ellen alongside Skarsgård as Orlok. Skarsgård had originally been offered Thomas, before Pennywise made him the obvious choice for the monster.

The casting director did not think Depp could do it

Casting director Kharmel Cochrane has said she texted Depp in advance to apologise, because she did not see her as a serious contender for Ellen and had the usual doubts about a famous actor’s daughter. Then Depp auditioned, and Cochrane changed her mind on the spot.

No CGI on the possession scenes

Depp trained for months with Marie-Gabrielle Rotie, a butoh choreographer Eggers had used on The Northman. Eggers told Deadline and Vanity Fair that people keep asking whether the contortions were sped up or wire work, and that she did all of it physically. The big confrontation scene was so exhausting, with the screaming on top, that they could only shoot three or four takes.

5,000 rats, and Emma Corrin got the worst of it

Eggers used about 5,000 real, trained rats, with digital ones only in the background. Corrin had live rats placed on their body for Anna’s death scene, and Eggers admitted he had not known rats are incontinent: they relieved themselves on Corrin take after take.

Orlok’s moustache, and the prosthetic Nicholas Hoult took home

Fans argued for weeks online about Orlok’s moustache. Eggers’ answer was that a dead 16th-century Transylvanian nobleman would definitely have had one. Skarsgård went through up to six hours of makeup a day, about sixty separate prosthetic pieces on full-body days, and lost weight for the role. He also trained his voice down with Icelandic opera singer Ásgerður Júníusdóttir rather than have it digitally lowered. The makeup team built Orlok a prosthetic penis for his nude scene, Us Weekly reported it kept bumping Hoult’s leg during the blood-drinking scene, and Hoult kept it afterwards and had it framed. Eggers gave Depp the prop locket Ellen wears.

About Nosferatu (2024)

Nosferatu is a gothic horror film written and directed by Robert Eggers, a remake of F. W. Murnau’s 1922 silent film, itself an unofficial take on Bram Stoker’s Dracula. It was shot in and around Prague, premiered in Berlin on December 2, 2024 and opened in US cinemas through Focus Features on Christmas Day. It made about $182 million worldwide, one of Focus Features’ biggest releases ever. It is rated R for bloody violent content, graphic nudity and some sexual content, and earned four Oscar nominations: cinematography, costume design, production design, and makeup and hairstyling.
