In the summer of 2021 a show with the least subtle title in Netflix history quietly became one of the most watched series on the planet. Sex/Life is the story of Billie Connelly, a former psychology student turned Connecticut housewife, who starts writing down everything she misses about her wild years in New York, and especially about her ex, Brad. Her husband Cooper finds the journal. What follows is two seasons of temptation, jealousy and some of the most explicit sex scenes a mainstream streaming show has ever put out, almost all of them carried by Sarah Shahi. The Sex/Life Kitchen Scene: Sarah Shahi and Mike Vogel (2:17)

The scene that made the whole internet press play on Sex/Life. Cooper has just found Billie’s laptop and read every filthy page she has written about her old life, and instead of starting a fight he decides to act on it. Billie walks downstairs in a thin white nightdress, he pulls her in before she can say good morning, and within a minute she is up on the kitchen island in broad daylight with her husband on his knees. Sarah Shahi plays it like a woman who had forgotten this was possible in her own house, and the look on her face at the end says more than any line of dialogue in the pilot.

Why does this one come first? Because it is the hinge the whole first season swings on. Until this morning, Cooper is the safe choice and Brad is the fantasy. Here, for two minutes in a sunny suburban kitchen, the husband becomes the fantasy, and Billie has to admit that the life she is bored of might not be the problem after all. It is also the scene people searched for the week the show came out, ahead of even Adam Demos in the shower.

Sex/Life Season 1 Sex Scenes (2021)

Season 1 is built on two timelines. In the present, Billie and Cooper try to put the spark back into a marriage with two small kids. In the past, a younger Billie and Brad burn through New York, and the show keeps cutting between the two until you are not sure which one she is living in. Here are the scenes in episode order, from the first night of the journal to the finale.

18 seconds of the memory that keeps Billie awake in Connecticut. Neon blue, a bare back against glass, a lamp-lit bed and a man’s hands, all cut together like a fever dream. It is how the series first shows you Brad, before you even see his face: not as a person, but as a feeling Billie cannot shake.

Sarah Shahi and Adam Demos in the Rooftop Hot Tub, Season 1, Episode 1 (1:24)

Back to her twenties in New York. Billie and Brad stumble onto a rooftop at night, candles flickering, the hot tub glowing purple, and the clothes come off on the way to the water. The camera stays low and close while she climbs onto him under the surface, and the whole thing has the slightly too-perfect glow of a memory that has been replayed a thousand times. That is exactly what it is.

Sarah Shahi Topless in Bed with Mike Vogel, Season 1, Episode 1 (0:40)

The other side of married life. Billie is on top, topless, giving it everything, and Cooper is done long before she is. She rolls onto her back next to him in the half-dark while he drifts off, and the silence in the room tells you why the journal exists. It is a short, honest little scene and it sets up everything the first season is about.

A rough morning. Billie is bent over a bathroom sink, top pulled half off, splashing water on her face and staring at herself in the mirror like she is trying to recognise the woman looking back. Then the door opens and her friends walk in on her. It is not a sex scene at all, but it is one of the most searched topless moments of the first season.

Sarah Shahi and Adam Demos: The Night Billie Meets Brad, Season 1, Episode 2 (1:11)

The beginning of the whole mess. A dark, crowded club, Billie in a sparkly green top with her hair loose, dancing on her own until Brad steps in behind her. No introductions, no small talk, just his hands on her hips and her head falling back against his shoulder. By the end of the song they are kissing against the wall and he is grinning like he already knows how this ends. So do we.

Sarah Shahi Skinny-Dipping with Mike Vogel in a Stranger’s Pool, Season 1, Episode 2 (2:02)

Date night in Brooklyn, and Cooper has read the journal, so he tries to be the kind of man Billie writes about. He leads her over a fence into a stranger’s backyard, fairy lights in the trees and the pool lit turquoise, and they strip and slide into the water. She ends up on the edge of the pool with Cooper between her knees, and for once the thrill is real. Then the lights in the house come on and they have to run for it, laughing and half dressed.

Episode 3 opens before the credits have even finished. Red and violet light, the two of them tangled on a bed in Brad’s old apartment, so close to the camera that it is mostly skin, hair and breath. The names of the writers and director float over them, which tells you how confident the show was that nobody would be looking at the text.

Sarah Shahi and Adam Demos: A Lazy Morning in Bed, Season 1, flashback (2:18)

The longest of the Billie and Brad flashbacks, and the warmest. Golden morning light, a white tank top and a pair of white knickers, and the two of them in no rush at all. They wrestle, they laugh, she climbs on top, he rolls her over, and somewhere in the middle it stops being playful. More than two minutes, almost all of it in close-up, and it is easy to see why Billie spent ten years comparing her husband to this.

No partner, no story, just Billie stepping out of the shower with a towel twisted up on her head and nothing else, drying her hair in front of the frosted glass before she wanders off into the bedroom. 17 seconds of a completely relaxed Sarah Shahi, filmed straight on.

Sarah Shahi in a Red Dress: Car Sex with Mike Vogel, Season 1, Episode 3 (0:26)

Billie in a red dress, Cooper in his work shirt and loosened tie, and a parked car that is far too small for what they are doing. She pushes him back into the seat and climbs on, dress falling off her shoulders, and Cooper looks like a man who cannot quite believe his luck. Short, cramped and one of the hotter married-couple moments in the show.

Sarah Shahi and Adam Demos Laughing in Pink Sheets, Season 1, Episode 3 (0:17)

A softer memory. The light is pink, the sheets are a mess, and Billie and Brad are lying in bed giggling about something we never hear. She is topless and completely at ease, he kisses her neck, and it is the only scene in the season where the two of them look less like a problem and more like a couple.

Sarah Shahi Between Two Men: The Blue Room, Season 1, Episode 5 (1:15)

This one is built like a trick. Billie in a blue-lit bed with Brad, his mouth working its way down her body, her eyes closed, and then the cut: it is Cooper in the bedroom in Connecticut, trying the move he read about in her journal. The episode is about exactly that, a husband attempting to compete with a memory, and the scene cuts between the two men so fast that you feel what Billie feels.

Sarah Shahi Nude by the Window with Adam Demos, Season 1, Episode 5 (0:24)

White curtains, white sheets, full daylight. Brad kisses her against the window and they fall onto the bed, and this time the camera is as close as it gets in the series: her body, his hands, her face turned into the pillow. It comes in the episode where Billie remembers getting pregnant by Brad, which gives the softness a sting.

A fire escape stairwell lit like a nightclub, Billie in a sequinned mini dress, and Brad who cannot wait until they get upstairs. He pushes her up against the cinder-block wall, the dress rides up and the rest happens right there on the steps. Thirty-five seconds of pure Brad, which is to say impatient, reckless and very hard to say no to.

Krista Morin Topless at the Dinner Party, Season 1, Episode 7 (0:46)

Devon and Trina’s party starts like any suburban dinner, until a woman walks out of the kitchen carrying a tray of food and wearing nothing above the waist. Krista Morin plays it completely straight, offering snacks to the guests with a smile, while Billie in her red dress and Cooper in his crisp shirt exchange a look that says: what have we walked into?

Sarah Shahi and Mike Vogel at the Swingers Party, Season 1, Episode 7 (5:58)

The full party, all six minutes of it. Devon and Trina’s house glows purple, there is a sex swing in the living room, couples on every sofa and bodies in every corner, and Billie and Cooper walk through it hand in hand trying to decide how far they are willing to go. She dances, she gets kissed, she watches, and Cooper watches her. It is the most explicit set piece of the first season and the moment their marriage turns into an experiment.

Billie in a teal silk slip, a hotel balcony above a canal at night with the boats going by below, and Brad waiting for her inside. The memory goes from the view to the bed to a freestanding bathtub, her face flushed and her hair wet, and it is the most romantic thing the series ever gave the two of them. Watch her face in the last few seconds.

The finale goes back to the bathtub. Billie and Brad in the water together, her wedding ring catching the light while she holds on to the edge, his face buried in her neck. 17 seconds, almost all close-ups, and the ring is the point.

The night everything breaks. Blue light, an empty club after hours and Billie and Brad finally together on a low velvet sofa, while Cooper, still in his suit, is somewhere out there in the dark. The edit keeps cutting from her face to his, and you can feel the season building to its last scene.

A tiny moment with a big reveal. Billie smiles at herself in the bathroom mirror, lets her pink robe drop and walks across the room completely nude from behind, with Cooper reflected in the mirror on the other side. Eight seconds, and one of the most replayed shots in the show.

Sex/Life Season 2 Sex Scenes (2023)

The second season arrived in March 2023 with six episodes and a much bigger cast. Billie and Cooper have separated, Brad has a pregnant girlfriend, and everyone around them gets their own love life, from Sasha and the man she nearly married to Cooper and his boss. New faces include Wallis Day as Gigi, Li Jun Li as Francesca and Amber Goldfarb as Trina, plus more of Margaret Odette as Sasha.

Li Jun Li in Lingerie: Francesca and Cooper, Season 2, Episode 1 (0:19)

Season 2 gives Cooper his own temptation. His boss Francesca, played by Li Jun Li, peels off her blouse in a glass-walled apartment to reveal navy lace lingerie, and he barely gets his shirt open before someone walks in on them. Li Jun Li has the confidence of a woman who always gets what she asks for, and in this season she usually does.

Margaret Odette Sex Scene in Purple Light, Season 2, Episode 1 (0:30)

Sasha, Billie’s best friend, has always been the single one, and Season 2 opens her door. Deep violet light, a dark bed, two bodies moving slowly together, and Margaret Odette’s silhouette doing most of the talking. It is short and very dark, in the best way.

Li Jun Li in Black Lingerie Kissing Mike Vogel, Season 2, Episode 2 (0:12)

Round two for Francesca and Cooper, and this time nobody walks in. She is in black lingerie with her hair pinned up, he pulls her close by the window, and the kiss carries them across the room. Twelve seconds, but if you were rooting for Cooper to finally have some fun, this is your scene.

Sarah Shahi Topless Against the Door Frame, Season 2, Episode 2 (0:26)

In Season 2 Billie stops pretending, and the show celebrates. They come through the bedroom door already half undressed, she ends up with her back to him and her arms stretched up against the door frame, and Sarah Shahi spends the scene topless with her head thrown back. Twenty-eight seconds of the happiest she looks in the whole series.

Sarah Shahi and Margaret Odette: Two Beds, One Night, Season 2, Episode 2 (1:01)

A split-screen night without the split screen. The edit jumps between Billie, naked in a dim bedroom with a man she has only just let in, and Sasha across town under purple light in her own bed. Both women topless, both of them a long way from where they started the season, and the scene ends with Billie lying back on the pillow wondering what she has done.

Sarah Shahi Behind the Shower Glass, Season 2, Episode 2 (0:10)

Brad stands in the bathroom with his back to us, and Billie is a shape behind a frosted, patterned shower door, close enough to see and far enough to tease. Ten seconds, and a good example of how Sex/Life sometimes shows more by showing less.

Wallis Day Nude in Bed with Adam Demos, Season 2, Episode 3 (0:32)

Gigi is Brad’s new girlfriend, and she is carrying his baby, which makes Billie’s choice even harder. Wallis Day gets this scene in a blue night-time bedroom with the city behind the window: Gigi topless, then on her side, then laughing with Brad under the covers. The Batwoman star with platinum hair is one of the best things about the second season.

Amber Goldfarb in Red Lingerie, Season 2, Episode 3 (0:59)

Trina, the swinger from the first season, takes charge. She walks into a lamp-lit bedroom in red lace lingerie and suspenders, pushes her man down onto the bed and climbs on, and the scene ends with her lying back with a satisfied smile. Amber Goldfarb is a scene-stealer every time she turns up.

Sarah Shahi Nude on Top by the Fireplace, Season 2, Episode 3 (0:15)

A cosy cabin, a wood stove burning and a rug on the floor, and Billie straddling a new man in front of the fire. Sarah Shahi is topless and in control here, guiding his hands, before the camera pulls back to show the two of them curled up together in the firelight. It is one of the sexiest scenes of the second season.

Wallis Day Nude in Gold Body Paint, Season 2, Episode 4 (0:30)

A photo studio, a red velvet chaise, a crew with clipboards and Gigi in the middle of it all painted head to toe in gold and nothing else. Wallis Day holds her poses like a pro while the photographer works and everyone else on set pretends not to stare. Probably the most striking image in the whole second season.

Sarah Shahi and Amber Goldfarb Topless at the Spa, Season 2, Episode 4 (1:49)

Two friends, one spa day and a body treatment that involves very little clothing. Billie and Trina stand topless in an icy blue treatment room while an attendant in white coats them in a glittering wrap, chatting about men the whole time as if this were a normal coffee date. Almost two minutes, mostly in medium shot, with both women completely relaxed.

Margaret Odette and Cleo Anthony: Sasha and Kam, Season 2, Episode 4 (0:37)

Kam is the man Sasha almost married 17 years ago, and in this episode he comes back. Cleo Anthony gets out of bed fully nude, walks across the loft and back to her, and the two of them pick up exactly where they left off. Margaret Odette plays it with the nerves of someone who is not sure she should be enjoying this as much as she is.

Leigh Truant Nude in Pink Light, Season 2, Episode 4 (0:30)

Episode 4 of the second season opens on a woman’s bare back under hot pink light, the credits rolling over her as she moves on top of her partner. Leigh Truant is only on screen for half a minute, but it is a very memorable half minute.

Margaret Odette Threesome Scene, Season 2, Episode 5 (0:59)

Sasha decides to try everything once. A night in with a man and a blonde woman, lamps glowing in a dark bedroom, kisses going in every direction, and the next morning a laptop and a coffee in the kitchen as if nothing happened. Margaret Odette’s laugh at the start of this clip is the best thing in it.

Sarah Shahi Shower Sex Scene, Season 2, Episode 5 (0:43)

Billie is not alone in the steamed-up shower this time: hands sliding down a wet back, a bearded man pulling her close against the tiles, water everywhere. Across town Cooper drives through the night with a redhead in the passenger seat, and the edit cuts between the two of them until it lands on Billie stretched out in bed afterwards. That is the whole second season in one scene: two people who used to be married, moving on in very different directions.

Why Sex/Life Was Such a Hit

The critics did not love it, and it did not matter. Netflix said 67 million households watched the first season in its first four weeks, and the second season spent four weeks in the global top ten. Part of the reason is the premise: a woman in her forties allowed to want more, said out loud. Part of it is the cast, because Sarah Shahi gives Billie a warmth that keeps you on her side even when she is making terrible decisions. And part of it, let us be honest, is that the show was willing to go further than anything else on the platform, with long, slow, beautifully lit scenes that feel closer to a cable drama than a streaming romance. The chemistry between Shahi and Adam Demos was not acting either: the two became a real couple after meeting on set, and stayed together for about five years.

Sex/Life is an American erotic drama created by Stacy Rukeyser for Netflix, inspired by BB Easton’s memoir-style novel 44 Chapters About 4 Men. The first season of eight episodes premiered on June 25, 2021, and the second season of six episodes followed on March 2, 2023. Both were filmed in and around Toronto and Mississauga in Canada. Netflix cancelled the series in April 2023 after two seasons, so the 14 episodes on this page are the whole story.
