I will admit it: for years Cristin Milioti was just ‘the Mother’ to me, the girl with the yellow umbrella who finally turned up at the end of How I Met Your Mother. Then The Penguin happened. She walked into Gotham as Sofia Falcone, fresh out of Arkham with a stare that could cut glass, stole the whole show from Colin Farrell and went home with the 2025 Emmy for Lead Actress in a Limited Series. This is the scene people meant when they said The Penguin got dark in the best way. The night is already over when we join it. Sofia stands in the candlelight of the Falcone mansion in a black lace slip, her back to the room, and only when she turns do we see Dr. Julian Rush, her old Arkham psychiatrist, shirtless and tied to a chair behind her, scratched up from whatever she just did to him. He volunteered for this, and he loves it. She checks he is not hurt, unties him, slides the slip back over her shoulders and dismisses him with two words: “I have work.” She owns every man in that house now, and she won her Emmy for exactly this kind of quiet, terrifying control.

Why does it open the page? Because it is the scene that changed how people see her. Sofia spends the first half of the series as a victim, framed by her own father and locked away for ten years. Here, for the first time, she is the one holding every string, and she plays it in silk and candlelight without raising her voice once. The Penguin aired on HBO in the autumn of 2024, and if you only watch one minute of it, make it this one.

A Slip, a Pistol and Sal Maroni at Her Table, The Penguin, Episode 6 “Gold Summit” (2024) (0:58)

Straight after Rush leaves, Sofia walks into her kitchen in the same black satin slip and a long coat, pistol up, because someone is sitting at her table in the dark. It is Salvatore Maroni, the rival boss whose family has been at war with hers, and instead of shooting him she sits down across from him with her shoulders bare and talks business. Nothing comes off here, but the cleavage, the gun and that tiny smile at the end make it one of the sexiest scenes of the whole show, and Clancy Brown is the perfect old wolf across the table.

The best example is her very first lead role, the indie comedy Year of the Carnivore from 2009, where the nudity is the whole point of the story: a young woman learning to stop hiding her body. After all the chasing and all the bad advice, Sammy stands naked in front of the bathroom mirror and actually looks at herself, no armour, no jokes. Then she does what her elderly friend has been telling her to do for months: she strips off at the public pool and dives in. The camera stays under the water with her as she swims, totally free for the first time. Full nudity, but it feels more like a victory than a sex scene, and that is exactly why it works.

Sammy Gets Her First Lesson From the Neighbours, Year of the Carnivore (2009) (1:42)

Year of the Carnivore was Cristin’s first lead role and it is a strange, sweet little Canadian comedy. She plays Sammy Smalls, a 21-year-old store detective who is told by the boy she loves that she is bad in bed, so she sets out to get some experience. Her first stop is the couple next door. It starts with soft, giggly kissing on their bed, Sammy in a white vest and full of nerves, and slowly turns into a clumsy, funny and surprisingly tender night with both of them on the bed. It is awkward on purpose, and it is the moment the film finds its heart.

Hazel and Byron Naked in an Endless White Room, Made for Love, Season 2, Episode 1 (2022) (0:50)

Season 2 opens with one of the strangest nude scenes on TV. Two versions of Hazel and Byron, copies made by his own technology, wake up inside an empty white space with nothing in it, not even clothes. Hazel turns slowly, looking at her own hands, then sees him and they walk around each other like the first two people on earth, curious, shy and completely naked. It is filmed from far away and very beautifully, and it sets up the copy storyline that takes over the whole season.

Palm Springs is the time-loop comedy that made a lot of people fall for Cristin, and this is the night Sarah and Nyles stop pretending they are only friends. In the warm orange glow they roll across the bed, first her on top, then him, both of them laughing between kisses and losing their clothes. Andy Samberg looks like a man who cannot believe his luck, and honestly, same. It is fun, sexy and just a little bit sad, because they both know tomorrow is the same day again.

Made for Love is the HBO Max comedy where Cristin plays Hazel, the wife of a tech billionaire who lives in his sealed-off campus, the Hub, and finds out he has put a chip in her head. This is the scene that tells you everything about the marriage. Hazel lies alone in a huge white bed, then Byron is on top of her, she gasps, they finish, and right away a screen pops up asking her to rate her orgasm. She stares at the ceiling while he waits for his score. Sexy, very funny and quietly horrifying all at once, which is the whole show.

Inside the Hub, nothing is private, and that is exactly what makes this one so hot. In near darkness, Hazel lies back on a plaid bed with a man pressed against her, hands up against the headboard, breathing hard and trying to keep quiet while they kiss. It is short and very dark, but you can feel the danger in every second, because if Byron finds out, everyone in that room is finished.

Lazy Morning Sex With Sonia, It Had to Be You (2015) (0:53)

Almost a minute of Sonia in bed with her lover, and it is the warmest scene in the film. The sheets are a mess, the light is soft, and she lies under him with her eyes closed and a smile she cannot hide, while he kisses her neck and takes his time. No fireworks, no drama, just two people who clearly like each other very much. It is the kind of scene that makes you understand why she is so scared to lose it.

Sonia on the Floor, Then on the Defensive, It Had to Be You (2015) (0:28)

In It Had to Be You Cristin plays Sonia, a jingle writer with a big imagination and a very real fear of commitment. The clip starts with her rolling around on the living-room floor with her man, half undressed and laughing, and then flips into an argument in the music room when real life gets in the way. The last few seconds are the good part: Sonia on her knees in a tight green vest, leaning toward the camera with that wide-eyed look she does better than anyone.

Sonia sinks into a big clawfoot tub, bubbles barely covering her, while her boyfriend sits on the edge in his glasses trying to have a serious conversation about their future. She keeps sliding down into the water, splashing, dodging the question and trying to look adorable instead, and he is clearly losing the argument just by looking at her. It is a long, playful scene and one of the best looks at Cristin’s comic timing, wet hair and all.

Later on, Sonia wakes up alone, buried in pillows, then sits up in bed in a black bra and reads through a pile of old letters, one hand pressed to her face. It is a quiet scene, she is mostly thinking about the man she pushed away, but the lingerie and the messy hair make it a real fan favourite, and the way she reacts to what she reads is the turning point of the film.

Hazel in a Blue Bikini on the Beach, Made for Love, Season 1, Episode 6 (2021) (0:24)

A bright break from all the paranoia. Hazel stretches out on a towel in a pale blue bikini, rolls over, laughs, then stands on the sand with the ocean behind her and the wind in her hair, looking happier than she does anywhere else in season 1. Short and sunny, and the camera clearly loves her in that bikini as much as I do.

Floating All Day in a Pink Swimsuit, Palm Springs (2020) (0:42)

When you are stuck in the same day forever, you might as well spend it on a pool float. Sarah lies back on a yellow inflatable in a pink swimsuit and big sunglasses, drifting next to Nyles in his loud shirt, beer in hand and not a care in the world. Forty seconds of sun, long legs and that lazy smile, and it is still my favourite way to waste an afternoon.

Nanette Washes Up on an Alien Beach, Black Mirror, Season 4, Episode 1 “USS Callister” (2017) (0:28)

In USS Callister, the episode that won Black Mirror an Emmy, Cristin plays Nanette, a coder trapped as a copy inside her boss’s private Star Trek game. Here the crew lands on a purple alien planet and Nanette, suddenly in a dark swimsuit, walks out of the water with her wet hair pushed back while Jesse Plemons poses as the heroic captain. It is a send-up of every old space show cliche, and she plays it with a look that says she is already planning her escape.

Abby Flynn Bends Over in the Writers Room, 30 Rock, Season 5 (2011) (0:22)

Long before Gotham, Cristin was Abby Flynn on 30 Rock: blonde pigtails, baby voice, red cardigan open over a very low top, the ‘sexy baby’ comic Liz Lemon cannot stand.
